I've never ordered something and not receive it, but yesterday my SU order arrived minus the stamps I ordered. There was no indication on the website that they were on backorder. How does this work? And how long does it take them to get things back in stock?
thanks for your help,
Kathy
My SU rep has always updated me on any backorders. I would check with you rep.
I've had several backorders in the past. Most recently on my Holiday order. Several stamp sets (wreath, stars, feathers) were on backorder but I received them all within 10 days of my main order.
I do wish there was some sort of warning when we're purchasing that items are on backorder. I would at least like the opportunity to decide if I want to go ahead with that item or choose something different.
Thanks for posting your experience.
I agree that they should tell you when you order. But I must say I didn't have to wait more than five days for the stamps to arrive. I had ordered holiday home. I find it odd that they didn't at least have enough sets on hand to cover the dies they did have on hand.

It's very likely that the demand for the stamps alone was higher than the demand for the dies (not everyone has a die-cutting machine), so they may have ran out of stamps from people ordering just stamps without the dies.
I agree though, backorders on stamps usually have a quick turnaround, since they manufacture them in-house.

I hadn't thought of the sets alone! I almost always buy a bundle if I like the stamp set! Thanks for pointing that out.
"... backorders on stamps usually have a quick turnaround, since they manufacture them in-house." -- That is true for most SU! stamps, but occasionally they run out of other parts of the sets -- the labels, inserts, etc. -- and that causes the backorder situation. I'm sure it is difficult to predict how much of everything they will need in a certain amount of time.

That's true too, but it seems to be more back orders recently than I ever remember. I heard today that card stock and ink pads are on backorder. I would have thought that was because of the sale, but some of the paper is solid colors and they weren't on sale.
This happened to me once. I ordered 3 stamp sets, and when I received the order one was back ordered. So I called S.U. because I thought this was such an anomaly. They were super gracious and assured me the set had been back ordered but had already been sent out. This was on a Friday, lo and behold the back order arrived the following Monday. My take on back orders- S.U. will do their best to fill them as quickly as possible. I came away with the impression after speaking with someone that they really do care about their customers.
I'm surprised your demo didn't tell you. We have a way to check out those things.
Today I saw where there was a lot of things on BO.
Usually if something in on BO. It will take a few days to a week to ship.
Copied from SU site:
Please note: When items are on backorder, we will ship each item as it becomes available. At times this may result in one order being shipped in multiple boxes and possibly arriving at different times.
I have only had one order in the past; however, the special promotions, I've learned to order right away. There must be a place for contact on SU site; to complain that the hostess, the demo and the company got your money immediately; and now, you are the one waiting. You have the right to complain

Thanks, Y'all for the input. I have full confidence that Stampin Up! will send me the missing stamp when it becomes available, after hearing some of your stories. They haven't been in business for 25 years for nothing, I know they value their reputation. Maybe they can take some of the input we've given them to figure out a way to let us know, for those of us who order online only, when something is out of stock. An email would go a long way in accomplishing that.
I guess I'm not as forgiving of SU for not notifying customers of out of stock items prior to ordering. With today's technology there's just no excuse that would make me accept this practice.
I don't think it's SU problem to tell you. It's your Demo's problem.
Whoever the demo is they should let you know what's up!
We all get reports to know what's going on. I guess it depends on how often the demo goes to the SU demo sites.
That's one thing I do daily and sometimes weekly. I found out the information and post it on my FB page and let other's know by email.
And if you have a problem with a Demo or a Hostess. Then by all means contact Stampin' Up! let them know about it.
I totally disagree. My ordering takes place online. SU, being a major player in the crafting business, should have inventory control software automatically informing both the customer and demonstrator of out of stock items. Simon Says Stamp and other companies do it. I don't care if someone has to physically do it, fact is it should be done. I still buy from SU, but it's just not right period. Just my opinion.

I agree with you 100%. I also order online and, IMO, the demo has no responsibility here. I ordered a bundle, got my package today and the stamps are on backorder. Sometimes I wonder if companies (not just Stampin Up) don't tell us when something is not in stock because they don't want to lose the sale. For me, it does diminish 'good will'.
I've been buying from Stampin Up for many years and love them, but I want to know (regardless of which company I am ordering from) if something is not available when I'm placing my order so I can decide what I want to do.

I have run into b/o several times with SU. Have always gotten product shipped within a week. Recent pass I got the b/o item the day before my big order. Doesn't really bother me if something is on b/o. At least I'm already in line to get the item as they fill them in the order they were received. For those that it does bother perhaps SU could publish the b/o list on their store. They have a list for the demo side so would assume they could post it daily on their store. Personally I don't like having to keep checking a website to see if an item I want is back in stock as I am doing with another company right now for an item SU does not sell.
I got my stamps today (one day after I received everything else on my order). A backorder couldn't get too much faster than arriving one day later than everything else LOL.
That said, I still want to know if something I am ordering is not currently in stock
Now, for the BEST part, I'm off to spend this weekend using my new bundle (Holiday Home stamps and the dies for the houses WOOHOO) !!! Working on some SCS swaps, so these will be perfect...
Ciao....

I have that set and love it! Especially because you can make fall, Halloween and Christmas cards with the same set!

Sometimes the stuff ships later that same day or the next day and it's not a "true' backorder so it's not on our list. It was explained to me once that sometimes they run out of things on the pick line but have more at the warehouse and just have to get it. So, instead of holding up the line they just move your box on and get it out to you later. That make sense? When that happens they don't consider it a back order and don't post it.
I'll pass along the idea to include back orders on the customer ordering page. That's a good idea! Not sure they will do it though as that's kind of the point of this type of business, for the demo to inform you of things personally. I always try to let my FEW (lol) customers know if something is on BO. And being debt free, they don't over-order or over make many things so that leads to back orders more than a lot of places. Not sure what the solution is there as it's pretty cool to see a debt free company. And my guess is that there are more stamp back orders now that they are making the PP stamps, they have less machines to make both red rubber and the PP.
That makes sense minders. So instead of holding up our entire order a day or two, they ship out what they have and send the rest shortly after. They also don't charge anymore For the second shipping.
Not sure they will do it though as that's kind of the point of this type of business, for the demo to inform you of things personally.
You can't have it both ways, though. You want your business model to be demo-centric, okay. Cut out the online option.
Oh, but online makes everyone more money because it facilitates more and faster sales by being able to ship directly to the customer? Then your website really ought to conform to customers' expectations. The marketplace is too competitive not to. And I think most of us expect a STORE site to tell us whether or not the item we want is in stock.

I agree with you. At no time do I think the demonstrator should be faulted for products sold out of stock. I, too, have had out of stock items arrive quickly, but I have had items arrive up to two weeks later. In fact, the magnetic platform arrived almost if not over a month later. I'm just saying quick arrival of out of stock items is not always the case. Online ordering is convenient for customers and good for the demonstrator. It is SU's responsibility to update their online ordering database. Again I standby my opinion, there simply is no excuse for them not doing this. I love the products and will continue to order, but I am not happy with their practice.

I'm not saying it's a bad idea, in fact I think it's a good one! Just knowing how SU thinks sometimes I don't know if they'd make it an option. But don't misunderstand me! I agree! :-)
Backorders are frustrating for everyone. I would like to know ahead of time so I can decide whether to order it (and pay for it) now, or wait. I do like that I can include a backordered item if I'm counting on it to bring the party to a level for hostess benefits, and I like that I can include it and it will ship when it's available, with no additional shipping charge. I order from another (non-stamping) company that will not let me order backordered items, so it is up to me to watch for it to come back, and then place another order, and pay additional shipping. Since it's for a specific program for my kids, I can't really wait for the one missing item to come back to place the whole order. It comes down to being able to make an informed choice.
It's also worth noting that, with the current system, there can be a lag between when an item runs out and when it shows up on the backorder list, so there may be a time when a demonstrator doesn't know an item will be on backorder.
I ordered the wondrous wreath set. The stamp set came but dies are on back order until Nov.4. It seems it is happening more and more often now.
There is a dockworker strike in California that is affecting shipments of materials or items that are imported by ship. The stamps are made in the USA, but for materials, supplies or imported items that aren't made locally, it can affect the availability of even things like stamp sets. Hoping the strike is resolved soon so the boats can get emptied and toys into all our eager hands!

I hadn't heard that but I live clear across the country.
This was posted on Stampin' Prettys' blog this morning:
Stampin' Up! is experiencing some significant delays at their west coast ports due to a breakdown in negotiations with union dock workers.
What does this mean to my Stampin' Pretty customers?
These delays have and will impact the following back-ordered items until an agreement is reached.
Wonderful Wreath Framelits Die (item 135851)
Curvy Keepsake Box Thinlits Die (item 135853)
Tree Punch (item 135859)
November My Paper Pumpkin kit (potential back-order issues)
