So I have a set of prisma pencils that I am always adding too..the box is really flimsy now and they all don't fit..I also ordered a bunch of Sakura gel pens and other odd markers. My question is, how the heck do you store them, so you can EASILY get the right things you need? Also the storage solution needs to be PORTABLE. Is there such a thing out there? I know people have used metal cans from the dollar store, but I am looking for something a tad smaller because I don't have a giant workspace. Thanks..
I store my colored pencils in a clear decorative candle holder. It looks nice and I can get to the colors easily. My markers and gel pens are stored in some cardboard cigar boxes which can easily be stacked.
I keep my Prismacolor pencils in the tin they came in, in 1 of my 3 rolling carts. I have other watercolor pencils that I keep on my worktable in a canning jar. My markers I keep on my worktable in a basket, because it says to store them laying down. (At least Creative Memories tell you that)
I keep my ink pads in a plastic bin, upside down, but I need a better system for them. Not sure what to use yet. :p

I keep my Prismas in a leather (using loosely) case that zips which I bought at HL with a coupon of course. It is specially made for art pencils. I bought the 120 count, but they had cases for smaller sets. They are too expensive to risk breaking the leads. I also wanted something portable, so this works perfectly for me and was much cheaper than any cases I could find online.

I just finished a container of chocolate-covered-pretzel sticks from target. The container is tall and round and has a lid. I have been wondering how I could alter it and what i could use it for. This thread gave me the perfect idea! Maybe you have a container like this lying around that you could make cute with a little DP! And...it's FREE!!!

I haven't decided yet on all the pencils I have but for my SU markers and some other markers, I have the Crop In Style pen caddy. Its awsome and will come apart (velcro) from the trianglular shape and store flat in its plastic carrer it cam in when I take it to crops. I got mine at Photoalley.com for
$13.99. Check it out!
this is what I use. It does not fit the SU Markers or Tombow markers, but it is great for Copics and gels. I have anther for embellies. This is one of the things that is not on sale at JoAnns and you can use a coupon. I couldn't copy the picture, but you can find them at www.artbin.com

Just my two cents, those plastic sock and undie organisers fit ink pads perfectly. SU anyway. Hope it helps! K:-D
I bought the same case at HL as cincimom. Each pencil is held by elastic, and I've organized them by color. As I worked with the Prismas, there were certain shades I "needed" and was able to pick them up one at a time at Dick Blick. I also made a color chart organized by shades. That way I can flip to the "page" of reds to find just the one I want. Using light, medium, and heavy pressure for each sample, it is easy to see what shade works with DP. My sample cards are similar to the size you'd see at a paint store, and I have them on a ring. Since I move to different parts of the house, the case and cards are really handy for me, and the case protects the lead of each pencil.
I know this is a little off topic-but a storage question nonetheless-what about Prismacolor markers? Should they be stored horizontally or vertically? I got some clear plastic cases from Dick Blick to store them in and have them sorted by color...but I'm unsure about the best way to store them. Thanks in advance for any advice...
I use a Snapware Snap n stack storage that I got from Target. It comes in a set of 2 containers that snap together with a lid. I bought 2 sets of them and just stacked the 4 together (got rid of one of the lids). I'm more visual and find that trying to keep my markers by color family and put away in their boxes each time was a huge pain. So, I just fit all my SU markers in one container. If I need a color, there's enough room to shift them around, I usually scan the cap colors and can find the color I need pretty quickly. Another container has my gelly pens, another one has my pencils, and another has journaling markers, and misc. The containers all snap ogether and the lid has a handle for portability. I don't have a lot of desk space so I can just put these on the floor or whereever I'm working. I'll try to find a link: http://www.snapware.com//product_buy.asp?dept%5Fid=3001
The one I have is the craft medium rectangle.
This may sound cheap, but I find that empty "Q-tip" boxes work well. They aren't too large, so if you have lots of markers or pencils you can sort by colour (mine are sorted to kind of match up with the SU colour groupings), they slide open and closed, you can lay them down (for markers) or stand them on end (for pencils), and they are free! I cover the outside to make them look nicer, then label them with the contents for a quick pickup and go. When one is past it's prime and looking ratty, simply replace it with a new one.
I keep mine in a plastic shoebox, it sometimes is a pain going thru all of them for the right color. However, it is portalble and see-thru.
Thanks to everyone for all your wonderful ideas!!
Keep 'em coming!
This isn't fancy, but I have a couple of beautiful mugs that people have given me; I stand the pencils up in these mugs, with similar colors held together with rubber bands to make it quicker to find the color I need (all the blues together, greens together, etc.)
My prismas and other pencils are stored in a "cookie" container that held those long, round cookies - pirouettes or something like that. The prismas are loose, the other pencils (SU! Watercolor and Derwent Artist pencils) have a rubber band around them to keep them separate. The container is tall enough and big enough around that I keep my sharpener, my stumps, my sanding block and a small bottle of gamsol in the container. When I go to a workshop I just plop the lid on and put the whole thing in my traveling crate.
My SU! markers are in their case - sitting on their sides - on top of my desk right in front of me. My other markers, pencils, pens, Jelly Roll pens, etc. are in a white Pampered Chef kitchen tool organizer on the low bookshelf at my right hand. I also keep a smaller WalMart tool organizer on the shelf that holds my SNAIL runners, rulers, writing pencils, bone folders, etc.
I like having things like this that I use all the time right at hand!!! Thanks for all the great ideas
