Default Stamping places and Restaurants in Philadelphia

Hey folks, I am taking my husband to Philly the weekend of March 26 to celebrate his birthday. We need your recommendations on a few great restaurants in the $50-75 price per person. We already have reservations for Roy's (hawaiian fusion) for Saturday night. And we know we are going to City Tavern for lunch on Saturday. But needing more ideas about quality food...not fast food. Mabe be a good steak restaurant.

Also any stamping stores in Old City area would be helpful as well. I can't go traveling and not stop at a stamping store.....other than Archiver's, Mike's or Hobby Lobby.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Sorry, as far as I know, there's not a single stamping store within an hour or so of Philly! There IS a stamp show that weekend out in Oaks if you're interested.

I'm in the 'burbs, and can't tell you the last time I went into the city for dinner. We do like Tony Luke's if you want to try a Philly cheesesteak. The big two are Pat's and Geno's, but we prefer Tony Luke.

cvansluys....I'm in So Jersey and know of no craft stores in Philly other than Michaels or AC Moore.

But as Post #2 states, there is a large stamp show in Oaks (about 45 minutes outside of Philly) going on that weekend in Oaks. Do an internet search for Stampscraparttour for more information and directions. If you're in the area, it's worth going to. I'm going on that Saturday.

As far as places to eat, I would also do an internet search for Philadelphia and you may come up with some recommendations. Philly Cheesestakes are a big thing, but they are a sandwich and not a steak dinner as you're looking for.

Thanks for the suggestions bout the stamp show. We won't be renting a car and are trying to stay within Old Town mostly. Hubby knows all about the Cheesesteak Sandwiches and knows where to go. But, to me, that is lunch fare and not my idea of a dinner out in a big city such as Philadelphia!

Cindy, a couple of years ago, our son gave us a trip to Philly for our 25th anniversary. It included a dinner at Alma de Cuba, which was fantastic!

Enjoy your trip.

Thanks for the tip Linda! We are looking forward to it. First time for me but, hubby and sister and our brother-in-law have been before many years ago. We are coming in from St. Louis.

Default Standard Tap

I've heard good things about Standard Tap in Philly. http://www.standardtap.com Rachel Ray had a write up in her magazine a couple of years ago. Good luck and have fun.

Thanks Nic! Has anyone ever been to the Silk City Diner? It's in the Fishtown area? It was featured on Diner's, Drive-Ins and Dives.

I think we narrowed things down...The Prime Rib on Friday night and Roy's Saturday night. City Tavern for a lunch either Friday or Saturday and Silk City Diner for the other lunch. Brunch on Sunday at McGillins. Not sure yet on Sunday early dinner....have to be at airport early for 7pm flight home.

Seeing the usual sights...Independence and Liberty Bell Centers, Christ Church and cemetary to throw coins on Ben's grave, tour of Eastern State Penitentary and Betsy Ross house tour. I will be toured out for sure!!

If you have time, check out the Constitution Center too! Enjoy your visit to Philly, and let us know how it was!

Wow, I live just outside of Philadelphia and there are resturants mentioned here that I have never heard of! :o) City Tavern is a MUST!!! The last time I was there, the waitresses/waiters were dressed in Colonial garb....it was a wonderful lunch. If you are wandering around center city....about 15/18 blocks from City Tavern and the historical areas, make sure that you visit the Reading Terminal Market. It is around 12th and Market Sts. Take in some of the Pennsylvania Dutch goodies available like shoe fly pie and scrapple. YUMMMMM!!! :o) Do your best to even take a walk around the Art Museum. That views of Boat House Row and the river rival views of cities in Europe. (I have been to many of the major cities so I can make that comment.) As long as you are near Christ's Church walk a few more blocks north and visit Elfred's Alley. It is the oldest continually inhabited street in the country. You can't get into any of the houses but they are facinating. Also, the Constitution Center is a must. Visit the room that has the life size statues of the signers of the Constitution. Make sure you sign the book, too, and fill out the computer form. You will be emailed (for free) a certificate that says YOU were a signer. It is really cute! In the last few years, I have noticed double decker tour buses. I don't know the route that they take, but I saw one this past weekend in Memorial Park. Memorial Park is an area that was build to commerate the County's Centenial! That might be a great option for you too!

If you have a car and decide to go the the Stamp Show in Oaks (about 45 minutes from the city (I-76 to 422 West) make sure that you jump off the highway and visit Valley Forge National Park (you will drive right past it). I just visited there this weekend (to take photos) and it is a lovely few hours. You can always tell hubby that you want to go to Valley Forge and then say "hey, the stamp show is only 20 minutes further... :o)

As for stamp stores, there aren't any left that I am aware of. The last one I knew of in Ardmore (about 20 minutes from Center City) closed about 5 years ago. There is a lovely scrapbook store just off the PA Turnpike (NE extension) in a small town called Quakertown. Unfortunately, it is at least an hour outside of Philly.

Philadelphia is a beautiful city. I lived and worked in the historical section in my younger days and it was so humbling to walk the same streets that our forefathers did. Please enjoy your trip!
