My must-have BG stamps are Canvas and Print Pattern. My absolute favorite set is Looks Like Spring. However, if you are a SBer, invest in some alphabet sets.

For alphabets I'd suggest two things...

1) Karen Foster Snap Stamps (love, love, oh...did I mention LOVE mine?)

and

2) Clear sets (like Close To My Heart acrylix or similar)

As far as SU...I love the backgrounds (linen, print pattern are my favs) and I love my Wonderful Words set (use it a lot). For other things I'd say it matters on your taste a lot. I personally would choose a leaf set if you are looking for a single set for cards...I love that they can be for female or male and for any occasion from birthday to sympathy. I assume you'll want some kid/baby sets if you're scrapbooking....I love Unfrogettable and Ruff Day.
