My Big Shot has died. I am thinking about getting the Spellbinders Platinum 6 with the larger platform. I'd love to hear from those of you who have it and use it. The only think I noticed is that it does not have a Magnetic Platform. Looking forward to hearing your comments. LM :-)
I have the Fun Stampers Journey model. It cuts well and cuts easily. For embossing, I would get the Universal Plate System. Embossing is not as easy to do on this machine as on the Big Shot, but getting their plate system would solve that problem. Yes, there is no magnetic plate. I use low tack tape to hold my dies in place so stop the shifting.
I originally bought this to use with my Glimmer Machine. But, since I have it, I do cut sometimes, but never emboss. It is just too tight a fit with their original platform. Their Universal System has many shims and a platform similar to the Big Shot. I use my Big Shot Plus for most everything, especially embossing.
Stampin Up has their own cut and emboss machine and it looks just like the Spellblinders one. They have the base plate and other plates labeled so you know the sandwich. That might be another alternative.
I bought one just to use with the spellbinders better press ( letter press) system, for that it works perfectly. It seems to be just a shade bigger than the old original cuttlebugs if you ever had one of those?
I have the Platinum 6 and love it. I got it because my perfectly good Big Shot just takes up too much space. I do have the new platform set, but that is what comes standard with the Platinum 6 now anyway. I still have, but don't always use, the Sizzix magnetic platform. It is exactly the same thickness as the older platinum 6 standard platform. I have used the magnetic platform with the Sizzix cutting plates in the Platinum 6.
Fionna...Thank you so much for letting me know that the Big Shot Magnetic Plate fits and works in the Platinum. LM :-)

Be careful when you do a substitution with the brands of platforms and cutting plates. If your sandwich doesn't crank into the machine easily, then don't force it. There are individual differences in machines, regardless of brand. Some are tighter, some are looser. While the differences are minor, if it's loose, a shim or two will solve the problem. But if it's tight, you can damage your machine.
Since I tend to be one who goes for "easiest" over other options, when cutting dies, I use the new platform layers because they are really easy to adjust if there's any sign of being too tight. I find it "easiest" to just grab a piece or two of tape rather than getting the magnetic platform out.
