I am looking for some creative ideas for a "slow economy survival kit" idea. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Oh this is intriguing .... subbing just out of curiousity! I'm not really sure what a SESK would be ....... do you mean craft wise? Maybe something recycled, like cards made with items you'd normally throw away?
Yes - please elaborate. Craft wise, as in using a potato to carve out your own stamp? Or as in a potato peeler - as in cooking at home, instead of eating out?

Probably not helpful but my DES had a birthday right when the economy was in all the news and for his birthday he always has cheesecake... this year his (first) cake was a cheese sandwich with a candle in it ... don't worry he got his cheesecake.
There are so many things that you will find in your own homes which will help you out in stamping. Making your own backgrounds using things like salt, masking tape, onion bags, onion skins, coffee and tea bags, baby wipes...oh the list goes on.
The trend the last couple of years has been decidedly to using bought DP. Before this became more the norm, we stamped or made our own. It is very refreshing to know your paper as well as your image are all your own.

I'm going to stop buying DP - it never matches anything I want to do... so I still end up making my own - I'm probably "frown" upon by the elitest but at least it matches everything then!
The purists just might be very happy though....more stampified than scrappified look coming back in. Could you set a trend? Me, I am already pretty much there.

I think the best thing I can suggest is finding ways to use ONLY what you already have. If all you've got is one stamp set, two pads and a few chunks of card stock, then that's it. I'd be finding things around the house to stamp and decorate, or using household items to create cool looks as someone else suggested. There's always using a blender, water, a screen and a towel to make your own cool cardstocks from scraps or mistake cards. Let teachers gifts be things that you and your kids make using items around the house. There are tons of ideas out there. I have a set of books called "trash to treasure", and I would be surprised if there is not a website that gives ideas along those lines. Some are really cute!

Wise words!
When I'm card making I always remember my High School art teacher and we did the "cheat batik" with crayons. She did one with us and then cut hers up, frayed the edges and mounted it on cardstock for notelets. They were gorgeous. I think my husband found my stash of crayons that I was waiting to do this with
Here are a few more I found by searching the internet Some I got a few different reasons for.
A Potholder - For when things get too hot to handle
A Penny - So you will never have to say, "I"m broke".
A penny - to give you the extra cents (sense) to know which battles are worth fighting, and which are better ignored.
A Cotton Ball - For the rough roads, seek the cushioned support of family and friends
Candle: To light up the darkness
Candle - to remind you there is a light at the end of the tunnel
Rubber Ball - to help you "bounce" back.
Skittles Candy - to remind you that there is a rainbow at the end of every storm
A lemon drop - to remind you that "when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade."
Umbrella - For those rainy days when it just seems to pour down.
Lollipop - To help you lick your problems
Tissues - To wipe away the tears.
Hand - Everyone needs a helping hand.
Wipes: For cleaning up life's little messes
Nuts: To remind you to laugh when things get nutty around the house
Tootsie Roll: To remind you to roll with the punches
Payday – so you always have a paycheck
Crayon – so you can “draw” strength from the people who love you

Thanks to all of you for the wonderful ideas! I love the earplugs and all the other suggestions. I think I am going to try to make some for friends who have lost their jobs. I couldn't have come up with these things without your input!
Great ideas! Thanks for sharing. This would make a really unique gift for a friend or family member who is having hard times - plus a note of encouragement or a personal promise to help wherever you can.
