Question Rub ons & Plastic?

Baby DD got a helmet to wear -long story.. I am going to "alter " it. I have a really cute basic gray rub on that I want to use. My question is- can you apply rub on's to plastic that has been painted with acrylic and after putting on the rub on- then set with an acrylic sealer. I hope that makes sense. Do you think the rub on would stay put. or could it scratch off? I am also going to cut out stickers that match with my cricut. I think the sealer should hold them on. Let me know what you think. If anyone has used rub ons on plastic.

I know people who have used rub-ons on plastic and if I remmber correctly they stayed. I don't think they set it-but they did say to keep it away from water (It was a bowl.) I would think you'd be ok.

WAIT!! Before you apply any decorations to the helment, carefully read and re-read the instructions that came with the helmet. I remember when my son plastered his helmet with stickers years ago, and according to the leaflet from the manufacturer, that affected the performance of it. I don't remember why, lol, and on the face of it it seems crazy...

Still...doublecheck.

Thanks. I will try it and I can always paint over it if I need to. I am glad that it should work... Water isn't an issue- will have to wipe the inside w/ alcohol. It's not a bicycle helmet. It is a cranial remolding helmet. Unfortunately I didn't get any written instructions with it. But I know a lot of people have decorated them. Thanks for all your help. I am dealing with a GRUMPY baby today!

You could ask the therapist who made it how others have decorated them in the past. I am not a pediatric therapist, but do know what you are talking about. Rest assured the treatment is very successful, and will be worth the effort in the end!

I'm not sure about the rub on but make sure you treat the plastic surface with gesso or something so that the paint will bond.

I would first try is on a sample. I know the rub-ons will wear off if the helmet gets some wear and tear. I would try rub-ons on some plastic and see how they react with a spray sealer on top.

Good luck!

Thank you, that made me feel a bit better about this whole process! I have been looking at some helmets online and some people make them soooo cute!

Thanks everyone. I will try all those steps. DH didn't like the rub on I had picked out, so it is back to the drawing board- so to speak...

Default decorating helmet

I can't tell exactly how old your DD is but could you let her help by picking out colors or stickers or rub-ons. I know about grumpy DD. When my 25 yr old was tiny she had cranial facial surgery. Let yours express herself and take some ownership. Just a suggestion. GOOD LUCK
