Man! I am still in shock. I just mailed a ton of stuff that I sold on eBay today. Most were stamp sets. I am way beyond stunned at how much it costs to ship these days. Make sure when you are shipping a set or doing a swap that you fully understand how much it will cost. I think I must have lost an extra $30 on shipping today.
One set cost $7 to send. It was in a simple very light box. Use the Flat Rate boxes as much as possible.

Yeah, I never sell anything without using Priority flat rate shipping and the USPS boxes or envelopes. It just makes it easier on everyone if you have the flat rate. Sorry you had to pay extra!
I pick up and keep at the house, the different sizes of the Priority boxes for just this reason. The box may be a bit too large, but the cost is just right!

I hear ya on that one, I mailed an empty 12 x 12 album to my sister and it cost me $10.00 if she could have found the album where sue lives it would have been so much cheeper the shipping was almost as much as the album cost.
And to top it all off they are raising postage AGAIN starting the 12th of this month. And I thought price gouging was illegal?!?!?!?!?!
I mail stamp sets in the flat rate envelopes for $4.60. I have never had a complaint about any of them arriving damaged. Perhaps that would be an option for you.
I have mailed thousands of things (including stamp sets) in the flat rate mailers.. and never had an issue at all. The Flat Rate Boxes aren't always the best rates either. I always put options for parcel post or priority based on weight and zip code destination ~ I haven't sold on ebay in a while under my name, I have been doing some for a non profit group here in town, but am not doing that anymore because we are getting ready to move. Just an FYI, you can order all the different sizes of priority and flat rate boxes and envelopes from www.usps.com. They deliver them to your house and they're FREE!!! (no shipping charge, either!)

Same here. No problems with mailing stamp sets. ;)
I solved my shipping problems by buying an inexpensive postal scale. When I set up my ebay auctions, I use my postal scale and the USPS website to find the correct shipping costs, and I can give my buyers some options depending on the speed of shipping they desire.
I agree the post office is making a ton of money, probably still paying
for the gas from the semi deliveries from christmas, does the economy ever get better

Just a suggestion if you sell a lot on ebay....I have a postal scale I bought for about $20 and I weigh everything before I list an auction so that I know how much the actual shipping cost will be. I have even been able to cut boxes down to a smaller size so that it would be under the next pound.
I ALWAYS weigh everything and add 4-8oz for a box (depending on size)BEFORE listing on ebay. I do give the option of priority or parcel post (first class if 13 oz or less). It is definately a tough time out there!!!

On Ebay doesn't the buyer always pay shipping?
I always use the Priority envelopes and boxes - flat rate and easy.
Postage keeps increasing and will in part because so many people communicate via email now and pay bills online - the P.O. needs to keep the same efficient system (or people complain) and staff level so they will need to keep increasing prices.
$4.60 to take a stamp set across the country, or 42 to take a letter to Alaska for me is a bargain IMO - I can't drive to my mall and back for $4.60.

I think shipping is outrageous as well! And so bummed that it's going up AGAIN!!! I was at the post office the other day and made a comment about how it just raised not that long ago. I got a few nasty looks from people that worked there, and they said, "It raised a year ago." It was kinda funny, to be honest. Guess they've gotten a lot of rude comments or something. And I wasn't being rude. I was just telling a customer that asked, "Weren't they raised a little bit ago."
Anyway: yes...I think it's crazy how expensive things are to ship so I always use the priority flat rate things just so I know exactly what to tell people shipping is. Even if you spend $1 more or something, saves you the money buying an envelope to ship it in. Just my thoughts!
