Seriously though, you are always such a bright spot here on SCS, no matter the topic!
Regarding the ongoing debate, I'm not a churchey-type person (is that a word Ted?), but I do believe. But what I believe or don't isn't what I base my cards on. I try to make a card that will be best enjoyed by the person receiving it. Mom's Christmas card? As religious as they come. My brother's Christmas card? Absolutely not. Why should it be based on me and my beliefs for goodness sakes???
Awee *blushing* thank you!
And I send religious Christmas cards to those who I know appreciate them as well...Santas and reindeer and all the other stuff I love about Christmas as well to the others:-) Which, I have to say 99% of the time I specifically hand pick the card I send to the recipient for ANY holiday/reason/event because I like to match the card to the person:-)
And to the poster above me your post made me teary eyed..not because I was offended but because The Old Rugged Cross is one of my fave songs...why, because it was my granny's fave and was played at her funeral...I can't even read about it (let alone hear/sing it) without crying I guess:-)
I, too, am very proud to say that I am a believer in Christ. My question to you is, where are these companies that you are talking about? I would love to buy Christian stamps. I can't find companies that sell alot of these.
I'm in the same boat, Lemur. I don't always feel comfortable "spreading the word". That being said, I know that Jesus also says (in Matt 10:33): "33 But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven."
I just don't want to be denied by Him.
I also think that the whole "Fire and Brimstone" approach would further PUSH people away than PULL them towards Him... so in terms of cards... I send Christian cards to everybody... if it offends them, they can find a nearby garbage to toss it out. I did my part.
I love your response Ted! I too, do NOT want to be denied by Jesus. So as far as the Christian sentiments...Just don't buy them. Just my 2c.
LOL, I like this:-) Now, I wouldn't send a Christian card to someone to deliberately offend them....that would not be nice! But unless I know that you are overtly non-Christian I probably wouldn't think twice about sending a Christian card. The way I see it, people "chose" to get offended. If I do something you don't like then chose to get offended about it or you can chose to get over it:-) Different strokes for different folks...and sadly most of my cards probably end up in the trash (maybe the recycling...that makes me a bit happier) in the end anyway:-)
I agree. I remember people being offended when I heard something sad and said, "I'll keep you in my prayers." They'd get upset.
If a Buddhist overheard me being sad and said, "I'll pray that you find contentment," I would hardly get bent out of shape. Their heart is filled with good intentions. I wouldn't say: "I'm sorry... I'm a Christian. Please don't pray to your god. Thanks."
Let's not forget that Jesus hung around non-followers of His as well.

And I don't get the Obama church donation thing. If it's public and he puts it on his taxes, you should be able to find out, and if it's private then... do you think it shouldn't be or is there some implication I'm missing?
No, you aren't missing anything.
Somebody said something to the effect of: "My mama told me never to talk about religion, politics, or money."
I tried to tie them all in one sentence.
It was a sort of irony that crashed, burned, and exploded.

I have a feeling that people who do this are just irritable people to start with! I know some people who have been "tortured" by family members - in other words, the person is open about their non-belief and the family just throws religion in their face all the time - and they've gotten pretty sensitive about it, and tend to react quite defensively. But most of us don't care about an innocent remark made by a stranger.

Spoken like a true Lutheran (whether you are one or not)! Ask me how I know...
And if you're not, I still second what you said!
Nope, not a Lutheran!
Hope I didn't sound too pushy or wordy. I tend to chatter away at times, as I sometimes have a hard time finding the right words to express what I am trying to say. I am so envious of those that are concise and to the point and eloquently make their point. Guess in my own chatty way, just wanted to let her know that I care, and that not all of us are pushy or demand others to believe the same as we do. At the same time, I do feel that I am to spread the word thoughtfully. Hope that is what I did. Pushy people make me nutso!
I have to agree with the thought of not spending money with a company that doesn't provide the types of stamps that you like. There are plenty of others that probably do. I have another suggestion for you though. I assume you have access to a computer, since you started this thread. Create a word document, choose the sentiment that you want to use and print it out on your cardstock. That way you won't have to spend a dime on a sentiment you don't care for. Here's a great tutorial on doing just that. Hope this helps.
Not offended either.
#1. I'm a very committed Christian.
#2. I'm very shy, and I really hate the thought of people criticizing me.
#3. I'm very shy and I hate the idea of having to "evangelize"(is that a word Ted?
Therefore...
I don't make Christian cards except for my Christian friends, I don't have a gallery because I think my work isn't good enough, and I don't run around "spreading the word of God" because I think that I am called to be a good role model and spread God that way. If I am asked, I defend my God and my Faith to the end.
"Judge not, lest thou be judged"
It's nice to find a kindred spirit. I could have written your post.
I do, however, sympathize with the OP about pushy family members. My aunt is the biggest "Bible-thumper" you could ever meet. She constantly quotes chapter and verse and evangelizes with great fervor. But I think she has probably turned many people off of Christianity because of her hypocritical behavior. She is judgmental, domineering and overbearing. She knows the Word but she does not put it into practice. I prefer to quietly wear my cross necklace and treat others with kindness, respect and acceptance regardless of their beliefs. Actions often speak much louder than words.
Love Christian stamps. Wish I could find more. I dislike when the sentiment sets have a mix as well, though, but for the opposite reason. I find that I can't use the non-Scripture sentiments because the quotes may not reflect a theologically 'correct' view (based on my denomination), and since I use these cards for church, I need to make sure the sentiments reflect doctorine.

Our Daily Bread Designs is one company. I know there are others.
This is my last word on this thread. I'm sharing a quote that I absolutely love. (And no, it's not been made into a stamp...that I know of ;) )
"Perhaps the greatest barrier to Christ has been Christians who pronounce Jesus so loudly with their lips and deny him so loudly with their lives." ~Shane Claiborne~

Amen! That is a fantastic quote. I am a Christian, but I no longer go to church because of those kind of people. I worship privately at home. I do miss church sometimes and I feel bad when my kids ask me why we don't go to church, but I have been to several different churches as an adult, and I am appalled by the behavior of those who seem to judge the most (and run the church). I would love to find a church that lives by this very quote.
Thanks so much for sharing.
As far as the Christian sayings on stamps-don't buy them if you do not care for them. Seems pretty logical to me. ;)
In an ideal world all stamps would be sold separately and we can purchase a la carte.
Oh, that wouldn't be ideal to me at all. While sometimes I end up with stamps in a set that I won't use, I have no desire to buy everything separately.

The thing is, it's not always possible to avoid them, that's the whole point of the thread - sayings in a set full of great images that you like - but don't want the quotes.

Exactly and it's way more expensive to do it separately. We like our sets, they are cost effective - - unless there are stamps you know you will never use.

I guess I just don't get the point of not buying the set because there is one or two stamps in there you won't use. I have lots (LOTS!) of sets that I bought simply for one particular image or verse. I use what I want, and the rest never see ink. what's the big deal? If you don't want to use the verse, don't use it. But to pass on a set that has many stamps you WILL use, just because there is one or two in there you won't, seems silly to me. Buy it and enjoy the ones you do like.

Well, it depends. As I've said, for me, I weigh the cost. SU! has a set called Nature Silhouette. I love the two animals, would be able to use the tree, but would never use the words. Well, unfortunately, the words are a large stamp so probably 25% of the cost. Ergo, I have not gotten that set.
I should say that I think like this for other sets too, even not religious ones. I have always liked the Dreams du Jour set, but I already have that Van Gogh quote, so again, I'm unwilling to pay for it, as it's about 25% of the set.
Then there's the Herb Expressions set. I don't have it, but there are some large stamps and sentiments, with one small stamp saying, "Thanks for blessing my life with you." If I liked the set better, that one small stamp wouldn't deter me, as it's proportionately a very small part of the set.
Does that make sense?

As a new stamp company owner (the company is ME designing stamps and then selling them LOL) I don't have any Christian-y or any type of religious-y stamps. The most religious-y stamp I have is sentiments sprinkled here and there with the word "Blessed" and one sentiment somewhere says "Praying for you". I try my best to make my sets as versatile as possible because I know there are people who are religious (involved in a number of religions, not just Christianity) and people who are not religious.
I agree with the people who have said to write to the companies. Some companies actually DO listen.
It's interesting to me to understand why you would bring this to the forums area. I see you have not yet started your own gallery and have left very few comments on your fellow stampers' cards, so it would suggest you are not necessarily into making cards as one might think from reading your comments.
I think there are WAY more people who craft that actually DON'T post their projects online but still come to the online community. You don't have to go through all the work to take photos and upload your projects to be an avid card maker or crafter.
I'm Catholic, completely believe in God, Saints, Angels, Heaven. All of it. The only thing I don't always believe in is the manmade rules and regulations the Catholic
Church comes up with. However, I don't like anyone pushing their beliefs on me. Everyone is entitled to believe what they like. I do feel sorry for anyone who doesn't believe in God because to them, this is it. They think you die and you're done. I know that's not the case. The best is yet to come. Sorry if this comes off as being preachy. As for buying stamps sets. If I want a set and part of the set doesn't appeal to me, I either don't buy it or buy it anyway. Depends on how much I like the other stamps.
Actually there are a lot of people who don't believe in God but believe in an afterlife of some sort or another.
I guess you just have to decide if the set has a stamp important enough to you to buy knowing there will be parts of it you won't use. I look at every stamp set this way because most stamps include some sort of sentiment (not just religious verse) and I never, ever use sentiments so I just decide if I really, really love the the images and I just ignore the sentiments!

I look at every stamp set this way because most stamps include some sort of sentiment (not just religious verse) and I never, ever use sentiments so I just decide if I really, really love the the images and I just ignore the sentiments!
Here's how I do it - I look at the total price of the set, the number of stamps in it I think I can use, and how many times I think I can use those stamps. Then I decide if those stamps alone would be worth the price, and if they are, I'll get the set anyway.
Or at least that's how I do it when I can keep my emotions out of it. Today I was at Michael's and bought a set of clear stamps for one stamp - two little birds, one is holding a heart that says "Be Mine" and the other is holding a heart that says "or Else". The combination of these pretty, happy little birds with that kind of dark saying just tickled my funny bone and I had to have the whole set to get it. Good thing it was on clearance
So sometimes even if the stamp(s) I won't use make up 25% or more of the set, if I think I'll use the ones I do like a lot, the set is still worth it to me.

I grew up Catholic. You may BELIEVE you know what happens, but nobody knows. You have faith.
There are some who would feel sorry for you for wasting so much effort and energy on a religion when there's going to be nothing at the end of it.
So please don't feel sorry for atheists. We find joy in nature and art and beauty, just like everyone else. Whether or not there's an afterlife, has no effect on my behavior. I live a good life because it's good for society, not because I fear hell.

How did you get to sell retired SU ribbon with your company?

I have that set too! But that stamp has never seen ink and I have zero ideas for it. If you come up with anything let me know!
I love this set and I too wished that the sentiment was a little more multifunctional at first, but that didn't keep me from making cards with it lol! I got to thinking that Bliss would work for a wedding or an anniversary card, or a baby card. I can think of a few instances for a friend type card that I could use it (including the chocolate idea) or an invitation or thank you to just about any event that involves hanging with the girls for a day. I guess it could be used for just about any "happy" event you can think of if you have an appropriate sentiment for the inside of the card. Of course the images are so pretty that they could be used with other fancy sentiments as well. Just some ideas for the set.
I found it difficult to find the right sentiments for sympathy cards and Valentine's Day cards this year. The trends are different than my thoughts, I guess. I ended up finding quotes that fit the occasions and the messages I desired. I printed those from my computer and used those in the cards instead. Sometimes when the companies don't produce what you want, you have to find other ways to include it.
Actually there are a lot of people who don't believe in God but believe in an afterlife of some sort or another.
I heard a saying once, that has stuck with me throughout the years. It says "I'd rather live my life believing there is a heaven, and finding out there isn't one when I die, than to live my life believing there isn't a heaven, and finding out there is one when I die, and not being able to get in."

Just because I'm a Christian doesn't mean that I live my life the way I do because I fear hell, cuz I don't and I'm not goin there. For me religion is NOT a matter of fear. I live a good life and am a nice person (most of the time...don't ask my hubby, lol) because I want to be and because it's good and right and I want to make others happy not mad or sad (again, don't ask hubby, lol).

I just re-read and saw that you mentioned being Catholic. I don't know a lot about it since I grew up United Methodist and now got to a non-denom church but I took a class on religion in college (it was a really cool class btw) and have a few friends who are Catholic and there seems to be much based on guilt there! It was not that way at ALL in the UM church where I grew up and I'm thankful for that. Not all religions teach that, just wanted to interject that...I like all people no matter if they believe or not:-) And now I'm off...going to be late for church as usual, lol!
Oh yeah, lots of guilt re the Catholic Church but as you get older, if you're an independent thinker, you realize there's no basis in the guilt trip they try to lay on you. Not that it's a "bad" religion, just alot of ad libbing along the way and not necessarily based on anything in the Bible. By the way, when I was going to religious instructions 100 (not really) years ago, we didn't even HAVE a Bible. The only time I ever read or heard anything from the Bible was in Church on Sundays. I too like all people. Don't care what their religion is, don't care what color they are. If a person is a nice person, that's all I'm interested in. There's way too much hate in this world and unfortunately alot of people pass it on to their children and the cycle continues.
