I am posting this here for anyone might be interested. I don't expect any replies. It's simply an explanation and I didn't know how else to do it. If it's not appropriate, the mods can delete it.
When I joined SCS, I chose RachelRose as my screen name. It made sense because I had been using it for my crafting name for years. I used to make jewelry, and that's the name I signed my pieces with, and when I started doing papercrafting, it made sense to keep it.
Looking around the forum at the time when I signed up, I saw that some people used screen names that were clearly their own name, or something very like. I also saw that some people used screen names that bore no resemblance to actual names. Some of those people had their real names in their sig line, and some didn't. So obviously there were all those options.
I chose not to put my name in my sig line because I have a long habit of trying to stay anonymous online. An nasty and upsetting experience with using my actual name on a forum, involving someone from my past, about which I'll say no more.
But RachelRose does sound like a name. And so people started addressing me first as RachelRose (because it was my screen name) and then as Rachel, probably because RachelRose does sound like a name. I didn't correct anyone. I decided I was happy to be Rachel on the forum. It's a name with a lot of meaning to me in any case, being my Hebrew name.
But I now feel it is time to be entirely myself, for a number of reasons. Having been on this forum for two years, I feel convinced that nothing negative like my previous experience can happen if I use my real name - Robin - in my sig line or to sign posts or pm's. I feel my screen name is enough of a shield. That's why my real name is in my sig line now. And also in my profile. And if you pm me, I will sign as Robin, not Rachel.
I wondered when I decided to make this change whether anyone would notice, or care, or perhaps even be annoyed - especially in the case of those people who have been addressing me as Rachel and seeing me sign posts that way. In the end, I figured there was nothing I could do about that. My hope is that it will not make any difference to lovely people with whom I have interacted as Rachel. But people are entitled to their own feelings on the matter and I respect that.
So that's it. Again, I expect no replies to this post. It's just information for anyone who is interested.

Ah - I thought I'd noticed something in a recent upload which I have been meaning to come back some time, or maybe in a post I spotted elsewhere. Thanks for the explanation ... Robin. I'm glad you feel safe here!
Thanks for letting us know, Robin. I usually come here several times a day, and it is like chatting with friends. As Cook22 said, glad you feel comfortable enough to be "Robin" here.
I've always enjoyed reading your thoughtful and helpful posts, and that won't change.

Well, I thought that Rachelrose could be a real or screen name. Either way I thought it was a Pretty name.
Back in 2005, SCS was the very first online place I ever signed up to. So I just winged it with My real name.
Glad you decided to post your real name. Hi Robin!

I think it's nice of you to offer the information, Robin.
I called fionna51 "Fionna" for a very long time until I either noticed or she added Diane to her signature line! Now I never assume anything about a user name.
It's fun to see what people use for screen names...and what their real name is. I like the threads where people say how they came up with a screen name. I think Meg's is one of the cutest!
I thought your post was lovely as all your other posts. I definitely understand the reason to be anonymous. I had more than one bad experience with mean people in my offline life who found me online. I have always used a screen name that has nothing to do with my real name not to stay anonymous. I just like to be creative. For the longest time I didn't write my real name to stay anonymous due to hateful people in my offline life. I thought "Really? What the heck am I doing? I am letting them win." I started posting my real name. Another reason I started posting my real name because a lot of my wonderful online friends became my offline friends.
I still won't post my picture though. I made the mistake on another forum. That led to definitely getting harassed.
Sometimes people ask me how I came up with muscrat as a screen name! The truth is, I had tried several others and they were all taken so in desperation, I said Who in their right mind would pick the name muscrat? ME!! That's who. I thought coming to SCS would be a passing fad or I would have tried a little harder for a better name! LOL

For the record, Kathy, I love your screen name. I think it fits your perky personality!

I did the same thing, Robin. I used stiz2003 simply because it is an abbreviated version of my last name and the one I used for everything. I really wish I had just used my name. But I did add my signature and I figure I'd just leave it alone. Coworkers used to call me Stiz, so this is ok with me. I don't think anyone will have a problem with letting them know your real name. People on here have been very understanding about all types of situations.

So many people have different screen names. When I started in forums it seemed everyone did, so I spent a while thinking of one that reflected where I come from - Bath (UK) and a very famous local architect who was called Beau Nash so I mashed the two and 'feminised' Beau to become Belle. Some people address me as Bath but it doesn't bother me!
I think RachelRose is a pretty name but Robin equally so.
I usually address people by the name in their sig line if there is one.
I am always intrigued by the name 'Buggainok'

LOL Apologies in advance to Bugga! Whenever I see "Buggainok" I ALWAYS think (mentally pronounce) "Bug gain nok" and then I think "no, it's 'Bugga in OKAY'" and then I think, no, not "OKAY" but "Oklahoma". Sometimes my mind interrupts myself and cuts in with "you know what I mean."
I wish we could change our screen names. I have no idea why I came up with mine and after years in the craft, reading all the blogs and info here at SCS, teaching at Archivers, etc, I can honestly say Im not much of a novice any more! Oh well, I'm always learning something everyday!

"Bugga" is a super sweet lady and there's a really cute story behind that nickname. It involves her grandson and how he couldn't pronounce "Grandma". Hopefully she'll check this thread and tell the story :p
