Default Question on SU Retiring Paper

Hello all,

A week or so ago I placed an SU order with my demo for some paper, including:

2 pkg - Close to Cocoa CS
1 pkg - Creamy Caramel CS
2 pkg - Really Rust CS

Got my order a few days ago and just now got to opening it to find that those above (retiring colors) are on "backorder".

It says at the bottom of the invoice:

"They will be shipped as soon as they become available."

My concern is... if these are retiring, does this mean they will no longer be available? And if so, why would they allow the demo to order it in the system in the first place?

I thought perhaps: "Well, after she ordered it, it ran out..."

But no... with today's technology, inventory control should NOT allow a demo to order something unless it will be held for them.

So just wondering if anybody can help or offer some insight.

Thanks for reading and/or helping.

Hey Ted!!!

Here's the backorder report as of Friday. Really Rust (8.5x11) was on the report, scheduled to ship 5/31. Since it's gone off the list, I'm assuming that it will begin shipping very soon. Same with Creamy Caramel. I'm waiting on 3 packages of RR and 1 of CC myself and will let you know when mine ships.

Haha, hi Lori!

Deb, thanks for that list! It's greatly appreciated.

I don't see the Creamy Caramel CS (8.5 x 11)...but I see the 12 x 12 of it.

Hmm, I also don't see the Really Rust ... but perhaps that's just part of the list?

In any case, I feel a bit better. ;) Thanks again!

I'm sorry my reply was a bit garbled. Just got back from a Girl Scout camping trip, nice and sunburned.

My order with Really Rust and Creamy Caramel has changed from "partial" to "submitted" which means that something is getting ready to ship from that order. Really Rust and Creamy Caramel have dropped off the backorder list, so I ASSUME (remember what can happen when you do that) that those colors have arrived at the warehouse and that part of my backorder will ship when my order comes up in the queue.

SU is closed tomorrow, so I don't expect to see anything "move" until at least Tuesday. AND they are going to get SLAMMED with demo's expediting pre-orders on Tuesday so as to get the new catalog quickly. That will also likely grind shipping backorders to a halt.

The only one that I'm even a bit worried about it Mellow Moss (8.5x11) as I have an order for that pending since 5/5. :(

HTH~

For those who love Mellow Moss I found a Neenah paper that is very close. I think it is just a shade lighter. Its called Tarragon. I get it at Paper Plus but I'm sure any store that carries Neenah can order it for you.

Hope that helps all you Mellow Moss lovers that can't get it from SU.

Sorry to drudge up this older thread...but my demo recently emailed me with something she found on the SU site:

"Card stock presents a bit larger problem, as the process of ordering and producing new paper from the paper mills is very involved, and we can't order significant quantities at this point in time without putting the production of the new colors in jeopardy (and we know you want those!). To help us be able to provide you with the card stock in the retiring colors for as long as possible, we will be substituting textured paper for some of the smooth colors--including card stock in 8-1/2" x 11" as well as 12" x 12"--where the smooth is no longer available. You will notice these colors go on backorder, and we will be filling as many of those as possible with textured card stock. Because the demand for each color varies, we are unable to provide a list of what colors of card stock will be substituted with textured, or at what point that will happen. However, if you receive a package of card stock that is textured instead of smooth, there will be a sticker on the package indicating that change. There will be no change in item code or price for these substitutions."

I was told that if I want any retiring colors (paper) I needed to order it by the end of May.

I did that.

Now, I have some on backorder and am now being told that, "Hey...you'll be getting textured paper, although you ordered."

Now, seems to me that they (SU) has an inventory system in place, yes?

So if my demo went to order these colors...and they were out, she'd get a message: "We may have to substitute texture card stock for the smooth. Please click OK to confirm." At which point she wouldn't place them in her cart/my order.

No, Stampin' Up! doesn't do that... because they are quite wise. Why lose a sale? No... we'll just say that we can't know for sure when we run out of something, so we can't guarantee you'll get what you ordered.

Guess that inventory system isn't all it's cracked up to be, eh?

Going into McDonald's:
"Yes, I'd like a Big Mac."
"Yes sir...that will be $2.39."
I get my order.
"Um...this is a Filet o'Fish."
"Oh uh...yeah. We ran out of beef patties. That's what you're getting. Next in line, please."

So if I don't like the textured cardstock, I can return it... and pay shipping. Nice.

So I'll keep the textured cardstock.

Stampin' Up is looking out for #1...and I can't blame them for that. They're not stupid. But I will NEVER believe they care about their customers (or their demos, as they showed with the latest IDA)... no, after reading many of their magazines (I was a demo)... they care about the almighty dollar.

And that's fine. They're a business after all... but my business will go elsewhere. I'll head over to Papertrey Ink where they at least ATTEMPT to listen to their customers... and don't tell us that we can buy one thing and sell us a substitute.

Yes, I'm rather angry right now.

(Disclaimer: If I'm wrong about how I read that message above, I offer my sincerest apologies."

I'm still waiting for a package of Mellow Moss cardstock that was ordered the week SU announced the change, clear back at the end of April. I also do not want the textured cardstock substituted. And tonight I also found out that a package of SU 8.5x11 cardstock is going from $5.50 to $6.95 for a package of 24 sheets. That's quite a jump! No wonder they don't want to produce any more of the retiring colors!

Not real happy with SU at the present time either.

I understand why you are upset, because I know what you mean about not substituting, but as for charging for shipping on returns? Most companies do that.... heck PTI sent me the wrong ink pad and then expected me to pay the shipping to have it replaced. It wasn't my fault PTI sent me the wrong thing, just like it isn't your fault SU substituted for something you didn't want.

I had heard about that swapping on here some time ago though and my demo knew about it for awhile... it seems odd that your demo didn't mention it sooner. I'm not saying they messed up, but when I put my order in, I was told by demo ahead of time that it could be substituted and did I still want to order.

GL with whatever you do. I know why your upset, but I hope that it will all work out as well.

Thanks for the support, Pasco and Polly.

Ugh... Polly, I'm sorry to hear that! :( Hope things work out for you.

I went out to my back steps and found a package waiting for me.

Seems I got two packages of Close to Cocoa cardstock (so I guess I'm just waiting on the other three packages).

And yep.... you guessed it. They're both textured.

Somebody told me in their fine print they say they reserve the right to substitute similar products.

Serves me right for not reading the fine print I guess...

I just sort of hoped that a window would pop up: "Our (insert inventory) is running low and there's a good chance you'll have a substitute for textured cardstock. If that is okay, click yes...otherwise, click NO to not add this to your order."

*sigh*

As a demo, I have been frustrated with the online ordering in regards to the backorders. I definitely agree that with today's technology, a warning about backorders would be a given. Maybe in light of these problems SU will make some changes in this regard.

I think you should share your frustrations with your demo personally. If you are unhappy with the substitution, you have every right to ask for a return/refund. The memo you received from your demo was posted on the demo site back on May 5. I don't see any reason you should be stuck with merchandise you don't want/don't plan to use.

On the plus side, the substitution was with a more expensive product (I know that isn't much of a consolation if it isn't what you want). Also, with the colors retiring, you could probably sell them for twice what you paid, plus shipping. Maybe thinking about it as an investment will make it better. (Obviously, I'm kidding about the investment part... I tend to crack jokes when there's tension)

Chelsea, you're right of course. I could ask for a refund...but I have a feeling that SU will tell me to send it back at my expense...and in that case, I won't be getting much money back (especially since paper isn't the lightest thing in the world). I would also have to wait until they decided to refund me.

I'm trying to see if the cardstock is only textured on ONE side. If it is, then I can make due with it and use it primarily as a base.

I just have an inkling that I'm not the only one upset with this system and although people aren't as vocal about it as I obviously am, people are thinking twice of their choices regarding obtaining supplies for their hobby.

SU has done a lot in the last few months (new, unreasonable (in my opinion) IDA; retiring beloved colors, substituting items with things not wanted by the consumer)... I think it's going to come and bite them in the behind. Sure, they'll have their loyal undying fan base (as so clearly seen in these very own forums), but in the long run it's going to hurt them.

I'd imagine Ancient Rome had its own undying loyal fan base in its time and well... look at them.

If you don't like what SU is doing, yes, tell your demo but also voice your objections to SU directly. Just because you tell your demo doesn't mean that he/she will forward your concerns to SU - we all know how some demos are about SU.

Also, if you receive textured cardstock instead of smooth, and try to return it, don't hold your breath about getting refund for product you received (even if it's not what you wanted or what you ordered), eventhough SU's online ordering is so behind the times that you didn't receive any type of notice about possible substitutions - SU also has a little tiny fine print stating that you can EXCHANGE the stuff for something else but that they don't offer refunds. I think the only refunding they're doing with regards to problems with the retiring colors fiasco is for those who never end up receiving anything because the items are no longer available in any form. Even if you receive textured that you didn't order and don't want it, unless you throw the biggest stink ever, they'll probably fall back on their "no refunds" policy.

Since they retired most of the colors that I use the most, I'll definitely be looking elsewhere for comparable color matches for the few other colors - for me, the new price comes out to 34 cents per sheet (which doesn't sound like a lot but adds up over time) - I can get comparable stuff cheaper elsewhere.

$6.95 for a pack of 24 sheets??? No way can afford that. I use so much cardstock for my RMH cards.
I will have to exclusively order from a certain other company where I can get 25 sheets for $5.
How sad as this is really going to hurt alot of customers.

In the past, I could justify buying SU paper if it was a color I could not get elsewhere. It will be much harder for me to do that with the prices going up. At 6.95 I also have to add my 6% sales tax and 10% shipping (assuming that I go over $65 which was the breaking point for $6.50 shipping). Total cost for me will be $8.50. Ouch! I will have to really LOVE the color.

But they (PT) only have one assorted pack. I like to buy assorted packs, instead of single colors that I never use up.

Responses for above above posts.

PTI does sell an assortment pack. It is called "2009 Perfect Match Cardstock
Sampler 8 1/2 x 11"

I agree that the heavy weight of PTI paper can be impossible for those punches with really intricate details. Most of the time, if I keep my punches sharp, I am successful punching 95% of my punches. I have no problem cutting in my cuttlebug with a variety of dies: nesties, sizzix, cuttlebug, PTI, and MFT Dienamics.

I also got textured cardstock for blush blossom (can't use for paper dolls anymore :( ) and creamy caramel and green galore!!! Not happy and I did call SU, not much support. I was told that they knew some colors were almost gone way back and weren't going to reorder even to fill orders put in way ahead of time. So I feel they needed a way to get rid of thier textured cardstock. They basically said Oh Well. I will be buying alot more stamps from PTI and just what I need from SU, cricut and silhouette machines cannot cut PTI paper.

So I feel they needed a way to get rid of thier textured cardstock. [QUOTE]

Don't feel like you're getting leftovers-SU! hasn't ever carried these colors in textured cardstock in 8 1/2 x 11. There are some production issues that make the textured easier to make in a short time so SU! decided to substitute with textured cardstock.

I know that doesn't make people happy (although I have been asking for textured in all colors in both sizes for awhile) but EVERY place you order from will have small print that states they have the right to substitute for a like item of same or better value. They aren't trying to pull one over on you. Textured cardstock is more expensive so they decided to substitute with a more valuable item. If it's not what you want, tell them! They can't offer you smooth cardstock because it's gone but they can try to make you happy.

SU! appears to be having some growing pains right now. I've been with them for 10 years now and the last six or eight months have been rough. I trust that the company is doing what it can to fix these problems. For the people who have genuine concerns, PLEASE address them with your demo. There are some bitter people who will jump on ANY thread about SU! to add negativity and nastiness, so I'd disregard any advice those people give you.

As a demo, I would NEVER push my customer's concerns aside and I don't know a single demo who would. YOU GUYS are the lifeblood of this business and SU! goes out of the way to make things right. If you are unhappy and your demo isn't helping, call SU! directly. They have always been helpful and courteous and go out of their way to keep demos and customers happy.

I'm so sorry many some of you have been disappointed with the decisions that have been made lately. All I can say is I hope you'll give SU! a chance to make it right for you because I'm confident they will.

Yes, you can cut PTI cardstock in the cricut. I usually use a higher pressure setting and higher blade depth number, but it cuts just fine.

It's good that Stampin' Up! has people like you cheerleading for them, Wendy. Every company needs its base loyal fan group.

I still like SU's ink pads... and there was a time I wanted them to be very successful.

But I feel that it's not a wise choice (businesswise) to say: "We're retiring many of your favorite colors....and those colors that are staying or being added... well, they'll be 30% more expensive."

For two dollars more I can twice as many sheets at Papertrey Ink?

"I'd like to buy two dozen cookies for seven dollars, please."
"For two bucks more I can double your order..."
"Deal!"

And no sales tax (for those not living in Ohio)

And free shipping for orders of $60 or more?

If it was one word I could give to Shelley, it would be: Caution.

There are other companies and some consumers are smarter than they think.

I use my fresh cs for card bases. I can get 2 from a sheet, so 48.... that's only 15 cents a sheet.

Then it would be 15 cents per A2 card base, but the price is still double that per sheet of 8.5x11 cardstock (plus shipping plus tax) which is how lots of people do a price comparison by company (since you can't typically purchase a half of sheet of cardstock from a company - only full sheets).

Fair enough.

I just know that as a Canadian, it's not a real savings to try to use PTI or the other US online companies.

I don't buy accessories from SU! as a rule, but I love their stamps and cardstock.

Their patterned/designer paper IS expensive compared to what I can get from our lss, but some is so lovely I buy it anyway.

just an fyi. I ordered some Orchid Opulence in 8-1/2x11. it came today and it was TEXTURED! I knew the 12x12 might be, but I didn't even know they made 8-1/2x11 in texture. my sister (demo) got other retiring colors in 8-1/2x11 and some were textured also. I really only thought I'd have this issue if I ordered 12x12. I'll still use it, but I was quite surprised.

Check out SU's clearance rack now if you are interested in their designer papers. Lots of beautiful patterns for CHEAP! I just ordered tons yesterday.

Has everyone else received their Mellow Moss 8.5x11 cardstock that was on back order? I ordered it during club at the end of April and according to my demo it still isn't here.

My customer (AKA best friend and ONLY customer) told me her textured paper was only textured on ONE side so hopefully you can still use it for paper dolls.

HTH and sorry for your inconvience!

All the textured paper I have is still textured on both sides but one side is very obviously textured (hence "textured" cardstock) but the other side is much less pronounced. The second side is definitely more on the smooth side when you feel it, but visually, there is still a textured pattern visible. It's definitely not the same visually as all smooth cardstock. Maybe for some, the visually textured but smooth to the touch will be okay but it might still have too much of a textured look depending on what you want it for. Also, the textured cardstock is a lighter weight (not as stiff) as regular smooth cardstock, so that can make a difference depending on what you wanted the cardstock for in the first place.

Good to know I guess bumpy faced paper dolls would NOT be cute!

It was a very popular color. My favorite out of what was retiring. I actually chose not to order any more of it. My thinking was that I will fall in love with a new green. but I still get sad when I use it knowing I will come to an end of what I have on hand.
Try not to get too frustrated - I am sure if they said you will get it it will come. I think everyone has ordered that color!
