Default Pretty pins on cards-how to make please?

Hello

I keep seeing gorgeous pins on cards and I really want to try these myself. I know that SU do the Pretties set and I have some of this, and I also do do a bit of jewellery making so have loads of beads etc. What I need to know is how to make them, what size headpin or whatever do I need etc?

With the Pretties set the end isn't sharp on the pin as an attachment is supplied, where can I get these other than SU? I really can't send cards with pins with sharp ends, how can I make them safe?

How long do they need to be?

Sorry to ask such basic questions but I can't seem to figure them out myself so I need help please. I really long to add some of these to my cards and I can't seem to find them to buy so making them seems the only way. please can you help me learn how to make these?

Thank you.

They are called hat pins and you can get them at any beading or craft store!

I just buy wedding corsage pins, add beads, a bow, and cut the sharp end off with a jewelery nipper (I am sure that's not what it's called, though...)
Here is a card with one... Here is another...

Where did you get your jewelry nipper? Michael's sell them? Because I've been poking the world with pins I think since I didn't know what to put on the end. I just send them sharp!!! (Probably a really baaaad idea.)

Hat pins or hard head pins are what you need. A good size for cards is about 3". If you want to leave the end sharp and have the pin removable from the card (so it can be worn as jewellery and therefore doubles up as a small gift) you can get protectors for the ends. Try the jewllery supplies section of your local craft store or eBay - I like the slim ones and they're usually called bullet clutches (this eBay seller has them here so you can see what I'm talking about). They basically have a rubber stopper inside the metal so the pin stays really firmly gripped in there.

If you do them just on the card, you can rely on a ribbon or whatever it's pushed through to keep the beads in place but if you do them removable, you'll need to make sure the beads are secured on the pin. A crimp bead at the base of your arrangement is a good solution or you can glue them with your favorite jewllery adhesive.

ETA - I forgot the other thing I sometimes do to protect a sharp end on one that's intended to stay on the card. You can glue a bead on the sharp end - bugles are a good choice but you can also do a few seed beads. Here's an example in my gallery with a bugle glued on the end - I coloured it first with a Krylon pen to make it look more metallic.

HTH, have fun!

So glad I came across this thread. I never bought the pretties kit, but love the look of those hat pins. I couldn't find the right things at the jewelery making section, because I wasn't sure what to look for. Thanks so much!

I just use a pair of pliers that has a section on it that is made to snip wire. Works like a charm. ;)
