I've seen some of the most spectacular card in the gallery that have so much depth to them that they are more 3D than flat. For those of you who make those beautiful cards how do you put them in envelopes, or do you?
I don't mean ribbon or brads, I'm talking about the layers that come clear off the page and to squeeze it into an envelope would clearly ruin it.
If you doesn't fit it in an envelope, how do you give them?
When I make a card like that it is usually one that will be hand delivered and I put them in a clear box and tie a bow around it. These are the boxes I use. http://www.papertreyink.com/pb_clearboxes
When the envelopes squeeze it on the sides, does it allow enough room, padded or not? I would image the padding would help with damage from the outside, but that the tightness would flatten your design. Maybe I should just try it and see for myself, huh?

Aha! I knew a box of some kind would work, but I couldn't imagine the right one. I bet when you give it, it's more of a gift than a greeting card! It sounds just so pretty!
What I do is change the card size to make 3d cards fit.
I measure my envelope first and then make my layered and 3d cards 1/2" smaller overall, in both directions, just so that it WILL fit in the envelope.
For a regular A2 envelope (4.25x5.5), I'll make my card 3.75 x 5.0.
For a 5" square envelope, I'll make the card 4.5" square.
For a 5.5" square envelope, card is 5" square.
And so on.
I then either hand-deliver, or mail in a bubble envelope with a piece of thin cardboard in the back to help keep it sturdy during mailing. I can usually get the "First class rigid" rate for those. It's cheaper than parcel post.
Sometimes though, I'll spend the flat rate envelope Priority price if it's a special card that I just want to make sure it is handled a bit better.

I make a lot of 3D cards...can't seem to help it! I do the same as Laurie. I make the card base smaller than the envelope. But then I just mail them in a regular A2 envie....but I usually have to put on 2 stamps.
