OMGoodness....there is just sooooooooo much I want to start my "business" and I can't narrow it down...I keep putting in practice orders and they're all silly expensive even after discount...EEEEEEEEEEEEEK!!! Help me out? Should I get the simply sent set in advance to show? Should I get the sets for the september special? I want to get as much as possible with my first 30%....HELP!
I would get one of the Simply Sent kits. I think those intrigue people, and they like to see what they're buying before they buy it! If you don't end up actually using it, you can give it to someone as a nice Christmas gift.
Someone also gave me some good advice about purchasing from SU. The most important thing you can buy are accessories (cardstock, DP, ink, brads, ribbon). Obviously it helps to have stamps, but the more accessories you have, the more and varied cards and projects you can make. Make sense?
I am trying to remember this as I place my first order....
Ok, so I have slowly creating a wishlist over the last few months, and now that I have my 30% off order coming up I have been taking all the things that I would like most right now and adding them to my first order (I have just under $300 to spend). I have a few items from the mini catalog, plus quite a bit of paper and lots of accessories. Heck, here is my current list of items on my first order that I will place in a couple weeks (I cant believe I have been holding out for a couple weeks, and still have a couple more to wait!). The list includes Hostess items on the bottom.

Ladies: Those of you who are placing your first order for the 30% discount...Have you considered doing this in conjunction with an open house or a workshop for your friends? That's a good way to possibly earn some more money to spend on your own goodies. Just sayin'.
should i re sign up as a new demo? or should I keep my current demo and come up with 201.00 to keep my status? did any of that make sense?
re-new or re-up?

You guys are driving me crazy! I've been reading here everyday and it helps get me excited for my upcoming open house. I got my demo #, but my kit won't get here until the 7th. I'm in the same boat as a lot of you. I am so anxious right now I can't stand it.
Here are my questions/thoughts...
Have any of you seasoned demos steered away from showing product that is not SU exclusive? I'm thinking that I would do much better to demo the items that can't be purchased at AC Moore or Michaels w/ their 40% & 50% coupons to boost my sales. I've been to workshops where people shout out, "oh you can get that w/ the coupon"

Waiting is torture! According to the UPS tracking web site my kit arrived at the local UPS Friday around midnight. So, here I am with a 3 day weekend (work full time M-F) and my kit is just sitting across town 'til Tuesday! :-(

I am in the same boat! I am a nurse so my schedule is usually all screwed up . But of course this week I work Monday through Thursday....and my kit is coming Tuesday as well.....
Why couldn't it have come Saturday when I was off?? lol!

Linda,
The answer to your question depends on a number of factors. First, are you happy with your current upline or would you like to choose another one? If you want to switch uplines there is a 6 month waiting period after you resign unless your current upline resigns herself. If you choose to rejoin immediately (and you may do so without any waiting period) it has to be under the upline you were signed up with immediately prior to your resignation.
Second, will you be able to use all of the items in the starter kit? As you know, you can customize the stamp sets in the starter kit as well as the colors fo the card stock assortmetns and the ink pads. However, you cannot substitute for things like the stampin scrub and mis, the craft and rubber scissors, the standard wheel handle, the pastels, etc. So if you're purely a hobbyist and do not classes or workshops, it might not make sense to get doubles of these things. This is also the case if a lot of the stamps on yor current wish list do not fall into the price points of the stamps in the starter kit. So depending on what you want, it may be a better idea to purcahse the items on your wish list rather than getting a starter kit with duplicates of items you already have. Yes, the starter kit is a fantastic value, but not if you're not using the items in it becasue you already have them.

Yup, my purchase is going to be in conjuction with my Open House. The list I provided is based only on what I know I will have currently....

This is really good advice, especially if, like me, you did not have a lot of the SU card strock, inks, and accessories when you signed up. In my first year as a demo I purchased very few stamp sets (though I earned a lot for free through various SU incentive programs :-)) and instead I concentrated on building up my Stampin' Up! tools and supplies. Honestly, what people say is totally true -- you really do not need a lot of stamp sets to be a demonstrator.

I wonder if I should re-evaluate a few of the stamp sets I have on my list and replace with non stamp items....problem is the stamp sets I have selected I think I pretty much really want. I will have to look again though. :-)

Amy, I would replace some of the stamp sets with supply items and then get the stamp sets with the hostess benefits you'll get from your hopefully ginormous open house order.
The hardest thing for me as a new demo was forcing myself to place stamp purchases on the back burner while I built up my supplies. But it is the smart thing to do from the business perspective.
Yeah, I have been redoing my list. :-) I still have a few stamps sets, but I took a few away as well. Its hard when I just dont know how many additional orders I will receive...
I am official. My upline came today and we signed the papers and I am in. lol
I am getting excited.
I ended up ordering the in colors in the paper and the 6 ink pads.
I got Earth Elements for my extra set.
Stamps are:
Solemn Stillness
Big Pieces
Loads of Love
Two Cute
Much Appreciated
Baroque Wheel
I also got the Memories Add on and got the 12x12 in Earth elements and Home Again Simply Scrappin.

I will wait to place my first order for the 30% dicount after the open house, hopefully I will get some orders if not many;)
For my open house, I plan to display/show cards, scrapbook pages, and many other different things that we can use stamps to make, such as notepad cover, tea bag cover, even maybe candles....what other stuff can you think of?
Also, I have been to CM open house that I alwasy get some free stuff (like a sheet of sticker), and I like that (well, who doesn't like a free gift? ;) ) what do you all think I should give as a "thank you for coming" gift? A thank you card? or something more than a card? any suggestion is really apprecaited.
Oh, one more question, may I invite other moms from my dd's class/school? is that appreprated?
HAHAHAH!!! Caved to the EE pressuer....omg I can't flippin wait till my box comes in.......
I did. I was a good wife and listened to my hubby too. lol
I also changed some of the stamps. After making all my decisions
last night I changed them all today. Typical me.
I should have my number in 2 days apparently. I am thinking Friday though.

At my open house I designed a card that everyone could make and take home with them.
If you'd like to do more, here is an idea for a simple and inexpensive gift (assuming you have or can borrow a heat gun). Buy a bunch of small white votive candles (I think Wal-Mart sells some for something like $0.33 each). Decorate the candles with stamps (see the tutorial here) and place them in small cello bags tied with grosgrain ribbon. Very cute, quick and cheap, but looks cool and shows people yet another use for stamps.

The candle thing is a great idea, I should look at that tutorial again...

I agree with Diane about making sure they have a card to stamp and take home. That has the added bonus of giving them a chance to try stamping.
Why not invite the moms? If it's not appreciated, they need not attend but it doesn't hurt to ask!

Thanks Diana!! A make-n-take is such a good idea for people to try out stamping!!!
I'm on my way to mail my paperwork right now!!! But I just had a giddy moment at Walmart (of all places!) I was looking at craft magazines and I wasn't seeing anything that excited me to much. Then I remembered as a Demo I get publications from Stampin' Up with ideas in it! Woo Hoo!
Can any of you provide some samples that is good for making "make n take" in the open house?
I know many of you have lots of beautiful cards in the gallery, please share!!! THANK YOU!

Once you have access to the demo side of SCS there is a whole gallery of workshop cards that you could use as make and takes at an open house. I would recommend something like this, using current ribbon or just leaving off the ribbon. You want something very simple that people can make without needing a lot of oversight and help from you.
I just called Stampin' Up! hoping that they would have processed my paperwork by now. They have not:( My demo and I sent in the paperwork last Tuesday (I live just one state over from Utah) and I have patiently waited through the long weekend. I thought for sure I would hear something today. Wish me luck that I hear something tomorrow.

That's not fun!! I would have thought you would at least had your paperwork processed by now. I hope you hear something tomorrow. I am going to do my paperwork at my hostess club on the 17th...I can not wait!!

I am very new to SCS but I just wanted to chime in and say thanks to the many, many folks that have answered all of these questions! I just sent in my paperwork today and I am just as excited as so many other gals here! It is so awesome to know that I am not just a complete nut because my heart skips a beat with excitement every time I think about this adventure I am about to embark upon! Thanks for all of your insight!
I mailed my paperwork yesterday morning, then my demo sent me an email and said that she left a number out of her Demo ID number when she filled out her part of my paperwork? Does that mean she won't get credit for me or be able to be my upline? I suggested that she call Demo Support but she didn't sound very hopeful that they would be able to fix that. Any other suggestions?
