Hi everyone. I went to the hospital yesterday to visit my uncle that is in the process of passing away to the next wonderful place and his sister was there as well visiting. She was admiring a card I made for him. She then told me that she has been stamping for about 2 years now and has been going to weekly classes at a shop in the neighboring little city and we were talking about stamp shops around the area and how 3 of them are closing next month. I told her that I buy most of my stuff from Stampin Up. She then asked what on-line store that is! I told her all about SU and she said she NEVER heard of it!! I know NEW stampers never heard of SU but a gal that has been stamping for 2 years NEVER heard of it? I did loan her my catty and she is coming to my Stampers 10 party in 2 weeks now.
I was just shocked as with all of the stamping exposure that SU gets and yet there are those that never knew it existed. I am planning on becoming a demo in May and she will be a new customer for me as she already asked to have a party!! Now I know there must be others to find!
I never heard of it until my sister's neighbor had a party! And I had been stamping and making cards for a few years.
So it is possible! I didn't go online much for stamping back then- mostly beading!
Back when I was a demonstrator, a guest at one of my workshops was startled to see actual rubber stamps themselves.
She thought it was all done by carving potatoes, and that we were actually going to carve potatoes to stamp that evening!!!
You shoulda' seen the look on her face when everyone else at the workshop proceeded to enlighten her regarding an entire industry based on the art of rubber stamping, including companies that manufacture them, to b & m retail stores dedicated just to this craft.
OMG. We were all laughing so hard, and none more than she! Good times, good times!

You should come over to the UK- NO ONE has heard of Stampin' Up! We demos are trying very hard-a few very talented ones have had projects in magazines, and some people have had stalls at craft fairs, but we are long way from Stampin Up products being used as much as K&Co or Hero Arts. We are trying though!
I never heard of them until I started my SCS addiction. Not CTMH nor Bela nor ...... I'm still a rainy day stamper and if the brand wasn't sold in Hobby Lobby, Michael's or Joanne's - I had no exposure. Now I owe an SU addition to my lovely and talented demo - who I also met because of SCS.
I found this site only because I wanted a CB and was doing research. ALOT of reasearch. This site has a number of extremely informative threads on it - so ... here I am! I'm a geek who can stamp.
I'd stamped some years ago, but I quit because it was just too hard to stand in the store and try to match up paper and ink and all. You can imagine how thrilled I was, one year ago, when the women's group at my church had a card-making get-together, with Stampin Up! materials! Just what I needed to restart this delightful hobby! Now, after a year of using and loving SU! materials, I'm a new demo. I'm loving that, too!
My experience was similar to BilliDee's. I had "always" stamped and created cards with craft store supplies until I found SCS while looking for techniques via computer! Now my knowledge has increased and I order products from many companies.
I never heard of SU until I came to this site a few months ago. Most women at the craft stores that I speak to that has been making cards for years never heard of SU either.

I was a scrapbooker for two years before I learned how big it was. We had only one local store at the time, and I had never heard of Creative Memories. Funny, I remember looking at the contest winning pages they had displayed and thinking, "They have WAY too much time on their hands!" Of course, my son was a baby then, and I didn't do much of anything except mat the pics and journal. I 'got' it later!
Art is intended to provoke an emotion from a total stranger. If youve succeeded in this, consider yourself an artist. Paper Shanks Blog. Love me or hate me, you are still talking about me
I started stamping in 1994 and it wasn't until I was at a scrapbooking retreat in 2005 that I learned about SU.....and of course became addicted! :> So, I had been stamping for eleven years before I knew about them!
I found out about SU in the mid nineties and one of my first set is foam mounted. Oh the good old days when stamps were very detailed and realistic, not line art doodling.

I had been st amping for over 12 years when I moved to Guam and learned about SU! I was shocked! I remember saying-"you mean I can buy stamps at home parties?!" When my upline said yes, I books a party right then. Of course I had just arrived and knew no one, so she had to help me make a minimum party, but I signed up to be a demo about 2 months later. In my defense, I had been living in Europe, so that is why I had not heard of SU!

I had never heard of them, until my sister in law started going to their parties, which she ended up giving me all her stamps, and truthfully (dont throw those potatoes at me) I am not a huge fan of SU, I have a friend who is a TAC demo, and so I really started with TAC and they are my favs...LOL

And here I thought it was just us Canadians that are sooo slow!!!!!
Sorry I never heard of SU until a couple of years ago when I started scrapbooking with Creative Memories. My girl friends told me about it and they had just found out also. hehe
Kathy
When I first told my now-DH that I collected rubberstamps, he thought I meant stamps that said "Cancel," "Copy," "Fax," etc. Then when I told him that I liked to go to rubber stamp conventions, he thought it meant that everyone had tables set up to display their "collections" of office stamps. I still married him.
LOL

I've been stamping and scrapbooking for about 10 years. I didn't know about Stampin' Up until about 2 years ago. I had just received a gift of a copy of Paper Crafts magazine, and I saw a card in there with a stamp on it that I just *had* to have. I looked in the information, and it said "Stampin Up". So then I had to figure out who "they" were, and how to go about finding "them". It's funny how sometimes we are so accustomed to something that it completely shocks us when others are ignorant of it.
In my defense, I hadn't tried carving the stamp out of our potatoes ;)
I remember years ago and I mean maybe 20 or so that I had seen embossing powder for the first time. The lady told me how to use the embossing pad with a stamp(very basic stamp nothing like the stamps now. She then showed me how to stamp, pour on the powder and then try to get it back into the little bottle. Then showed me how to hold it over a candle and watch it emboss. Looked easy. Well I get home and cut a bunch of cards ( no layers, didn't even know what layers were) and then stamped and poured on the powder, tried to pour the remaining in the container, lifted up my card and blew on it to get off the excess! Big mistake! I ended up blowing powder everywhere. Anyway got out the candle and placed my card over it like she did. Well the next thing I know I have a hole burned in it and flames everywere threw the card and caught my tablecloth on fire. Had to get a glass of water and put out the fire! After cleaning up the mess I tried again. After ruining about 10 cards I finally got it figured out. I did make her about 10 cards but never did it again until I got into Stampin Up! And yes I did make stamps out of potatoes also!
I remember the potato stamps! Oh how things have changed!!! Just found SU 1.5 years ago. That's how I got hooked. I think there should be a warning on all packages............... CAUTION: Addictive. May cause you to spend all your money! LOL

The warning label should also state that stamping may cause you to ignore crucial chores like housecleaning and laundry, but that it is ok and to be expected.

I tend to "delegate" those;) (it's great when kids start to grow up and need to take on some responsibilities)
I think I have known about Stampin Up for less than a year - I don't have any of their product *ducks down just in case pototoes come flying though if a nice lovely steak comes this way I may have to peep up and grab it* and I have to admit even though I see lovely SU creations here - I think I have only been tempted by a couple of things and now I have forgotten what they are.
Love this thread and I come from another direction. I knew about SU! almost from the beginging of knowing about stamping.
My sisters have been stamping for about 20 years and whenever we went shopping they were always going to stamp stores and I'd just wander through and just couldn't understand the addiction. Most times I'd be waiting outside the LSS waiting for them. Every so often they would invite me to a SU! party knowing that I would never come. Then one day, about 9 years ago I finally gave in an went to party. I should have recorded the date because thats when I started my own addiction. I spent over $700 at that party since I had nothing. My Demo really loved me that day!
I'm a research nut and I am always reading and learning. It always amazes me of how many stampers don't know what a HUGE amount of information is available. My latest shocker though, is how many stamp/scrap companies there are. It seems everyday I find a little company that has some really special things and thank goodness for SCS because the amount of things I learn is also amazing. Thanks to every one who plays here!
That is amazing! SU is how I first got into stamping. I guess tho if you dont work around/friends with people who have parties you may not here of them. My DHs coworked invited me a to party and thats how I was hooked.

DH commented on this to me yesterday. I was doing my usual Saturday afternoon stamping & watching movies and he "remember the days a few years ago when you used to clean house on Saturday afternoons" I told him if he can spend all of his time in the garage then I can spend my time with my stamps and WE can clean the house together! Lets start now.....He went back to the garage after that.
My house is clean but I am not constantly doing it anymore. I do make my boys do chores now as well.
