Default Look at these photo tiles! Think we could make them?

These are really, really neat. I'm wondering if anyone knows how to make these at home or any ideas I could try? What a different idea to display pictures in your home.

What a COOL idea... isn't there a way to transfer color photos with some kind of liquid stuff?

I know how to transfer Black&White photos, using packing tape, photocopies, and water...

Maybe one of these two methods would work?

Yes! I totally think we could do these! As a matter of fact, I am sure I just came across directions to do these somewhere ... I thought it was Wendy Tunison's CTMH site but now I can't find them there. SOMEONE has the directions to photos tiles SOMEWHERE .. I know I saw it ..
I'll keep looking and let you know. Meanwhile, is the person out there??? PLease come forth!

Well, I looked on QVC for a liquid transfer after you suggested it, but it only transfers to fabric. Item #F3384
I like the idea of using modge podge though. I think I'm going to try that! Thanks so much for the leads.

Cal-I think the tissue might work a little better for me b/c I don't think you would see the edges as much as you would if you used a thicker photo. I'll try the tissue paper first, vellum, then an actual photo last. Thanks gals!

I've done tissue paper with Future Floor Finish on a tile once before. Trying to keep the tissue paper smooth was a little challenging. Mine ended up a little wrinkled but it still looked neat.

There's also a product called Lasertran that does a beautiful job. Kinda pricey, like $25 or so for a package of it, I think. Does a fantastic job.

Here's a link to a thread from last summer about photos on tiles you might find useful. I hope to make some before Christmas, maybe to give away as gifts if they turn out. Hope this link helps.

I made these last year for friends and even helped my young nephews and niece make them for the grandparents for Christmas. They loved doing it! Here are the instructions I followed: http://www.art-e-zine.co.uk/tileml.html

HTH!

I did not do a search but I am quite certain that there was a segment on Carol Duvall (HGTV.com) doing transfers. It might have been on a tote bag though.

I just finished playing around with these. It's easy enough except I have one problem: First I put the first thin layer of mod podge on and put the printed tissue paper image down. But when I tried to put the mod podge over the printed image, the ink ran. Should I have flipped the image over and had the ink side down in the mod podge? Hmmmmm............

I just found this in one of the threads listed above.

"A couple of pointers that I learned: some instructions I read said to put a coat of mod podge on top of the layout before the sealer. When I tried that my colors ran and the layout started to bubble up. When I left out that step and just sprayed the top with the sealer they turned out perfect."

"While you are putting on your mod podge and smoothing out the layout make sure you dont' get any extra mod podge on top of the layout. It does dry clear, but you can still see it."

I guess I answered my own question!! If anyone has any other tip on this problem, I would LOVE to hear it!!

Check out www.somersetstudio.com and look for the Legacy magazine, and the back issue for Summer 2003 ( 1LEG-0303), I believe has the tiles on the cover. The artist used Lazertran if I remember correctly. Sounded fairly easy to do!

OOOOOOooooooo!!!!! I so can't wait to give it a try! I have 3 left over blank tumbled tiles! I now know what to do with them! That's my tomorrow project. I know what to do... resize a photo to 3.5x3.5, then print one on copy paper, cut white tissue paper 4x4 and then tape directly over the printed photo on copy paper, run it through the printer.... spray the image with acrylic sealer so ink won't run, then put light coat of modpodge on tile and then trim the tissue paper image to fit on the tile, do a light coat of modpodge all over the image...then do another light coat (after the first coat dries) then spray with acrylic sealer..... should be easy enough for me.

Great thread...thanks for all of the links. It's so true, there's usually one or two leftover tiles after the coaster project!!

Does anyone know how to drill holes in a tile? We tried a diamond bit today but it broke the tile. When he tried it again with water. the bit would not even make a mark. I'm thinking that the diamond bit should have done it!

Default I saw these at...

I am almost positive that you need a special drill bit to drill a hole. They have kits like this to make the coasters at Bed, Bath and Beyond. Look here: http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/prod...1&SKU=13794545
