Default Locating stencils for painting

Hey art friends. I'm a woodworker who's about to begin production line style production of a small picnic table I designed to be a chicken feeder. I call it the chicknic table. It's crazy cute and is gonna sell pretty well I'm thinking. My mom told me there are really nice stencils out there now that will let us (fairly non artistic people) create some really nice designs on my pieces like small flowers or whatever. She said using the type of stencil she saw included making the image in stages according to how many different colors are in the image.

I'm looking for fairly small stencils as the areas on my piece we'll be adding some flair to measure 1-1/4 in (30mm) tall and anywhere between 3-17 in (75-400) long. It'd be nice to find a stencil that was a long column of maybe flowers on a vine that was 3/4 in (18mm) tall.

I haven't started searching for stencils yet because I thought I'd start with the people who would know, folks on craft forums.

So question 1...any suggestion as to where I should look to find stencils like I'm describing. I'm not even sure what they're called so knowing that would help in my future searches.

Question 2...Why haven't I found any really large forums by doing a google search. I would think 'arts and crafts forums' search would have brought up some really active boards. Instead I've found a mish mash of good boards but not nearly as robust and active as I had imagined. Any suggestions for other active arts and crafts forums?

I'm all ears! Thanks everybody.

Sounds sweet!

1. If you are in the USA, the three *Big Box Stores* carry stencils (Hobby Lobby, JoAnns, Michaels) as does WalMart, artist supplies and various retailers such as Tuesday Morning. You could likely find some at Ace Hardware.
2. Stencils are easy to find online, you would probably get to search through thousands on Amazon.
3. It is fairly easy to make your own designs with acetate and some punches or dies, or even an X-Acto Knife. Just leave (and look for) a generous amount of solid plastic AROUND the design to reduce smudging.

edited to add: the search engines do not make any money from forums

Hi and good luck with your project. I always have a soft spot for inventors.

Given the dimensions you mentioned, I would google for SLIMLINE stencils. They are like 2-4 inches wide and 8 plus long. They do come in layering sets-just add that to the search.

One thing you want to consider is the scale (size) of pattern. True there are stencils all over the place-Staples, etc. but those tend to be large ones for things like walls, furniture or t-shirts and seem too big to me? if you want tiny/small patterns, then yes, ones we use for cards would be desirable.

Even our stencils can have different scales which you will see. You may have to shift it and keep applying your color medium-which will be what? If paint, I would suggest water based so you can wash them immediately. You can always seal them to make them waterproof at the end. There are waterproof inks in the world as well.

Consider the size of a stencil...then study the pattern and see how often it repeats so you can gauge the size of the flower or whatever. A common size would be 6 x 6 inches. You can also just ask a mfg by email how tiny the individual flowers are. Craft companies are cool people and helpful.

You might want to practice with any cheap sale stencil on copy paper with the medium you want to use. Once you get comfortable with the idea and moving it around to extend the pattern, use a shipping box and go down a side, etc...then invest in the ones you really want.

I suggest you go to You Tube-which has a bazillion tutorials and ask to see
"How to use plastic stencils on cards" and then again with layered plastic stencils. (so you get the right size ones. I always find it so much easier to see a thing done than to try to read written directions.

These should get you started.

Also be aware not all plastic stencils are equal. Some are quite thin and delicate while others are more robust and durable. Also Europe can call a stencil a mask. Which is for us is the opposite. A shape you want to block off from your pattern or color. So stick to the US for now.

Hope this helps.
