Default Let's talk about scrap storage!

Okay. . . .I goofed and deleted a thread that talked about scraps, and what to do with them all. Of course, we linked to that thread in today's Weekly Inkling, so now I'm trying to redeem myself!

Talk to me! Tell me what your solution is for keeping the scrap piles tamed. What is too small to keep?

Let's hear all about it!

I store my full sheets in a paper filing system I got from Office depot. I store the scraps of each color in a file folder I have laying on top of the full sheets.

I have an accordion folder that holds all my SU CS scraps. It's a short one, made by Cropper Hopper, 7" x 14" or so. I use 2 pockets for each color family, 1 pocket hold pieces smaller than 1/4 sheet and the other hold 1/4 sheets and 1/2 sheets. Then there's a pocket for each White, Vanilla, Black, Sahara, and Others. I keep it right on my desk and check it first before I cut into a new piece of CS.

As for what's too small to keep, I usually throw out anything less than 1 1/2" square. I keep all strips more than 1/2" though. It really depends on my mood

I keep CS 1/4 sheet and smaller in a photo box. I have made dividers from cereal boxes for each color. Each divider has a square of that color cs and it's name on it and all are organized alphabetically by color family. Any piece to small to realistically be stamped on is tossed for a time into a small tupperware container in case I want to check out the look of one color ink over another on that cs. Took work to get it organized but I love how I use up my scraps now instead of just reaching for another piece of cs.

I have a 4 drawer plastic unit from Superstore... one drawer for each of the 4 color families scraps. Then I have a larger 2 drawer plastic unit... one drawer for neutral scraps and the other drawer for "card starters".

I store my scraps in hanging file folders, the file tab has the color name and company made from the same color cardstock. I have a separate plastic file box for SU, CTHM, TAC! :p

I have a photo storage box (currently on sale at Michaels for $1.50) where I store my scraps. I keep all blues, greens, yellows, pinks, etc. together in their own color separate baggies. Each color has it's own divided section, using the provided dividers with a color on the tab (although that really isn't necessary as the colors are visible through the baggie) If the scrap is 1/4 page, it goes in the same divider section, but not in a baggie, so the corners don't get crushed inserting and removing from the baggie. Makes picking up a color scrap very easy! I often start here and then pick background layer, etc...

If the scrap is bigger than 1/4 sheet, it goes with matching color full sheets in hanging files, arranged by color (i.e. blues), with each specific color having it's own folder.

I have a number of the large plastic envelopes (12 x 12) that have a nice elastic band closure - and file the scraps some by color and some by theme (vintage/clocks), (oceans/water), (asian), (animals), (sewing)...

My scraps are in a 12x12 accordian file, the one with the black handles. They're divided by colors of the rainbow, and within the pockets, the colors are further divided. It works really well for me, it's portable enough that I can take it with me to crops.

I have a paper filing system with the metal cubes you put together from target. I have all the paper separated by color family and a manilla folder holds the scraps.

I have a hanging file folder thingy that holds all my CS. One folder for each color. Scrap go in the same folder as the full sheets.

If it is too complicated, I don't do it and they end up in a pile in the corner of my desk!

Jenn I keep almost all scraps.....it is so hard to throw anything out!

I have an accordian file box that I bought at Walmart (not the hard plastic one but some sort of hard cardboard) that I put all my scraps in. I sort by color...pinks, reds, oranges etc all go together.
I like it ok but have considered organizing my paper in hanging files and putting the scraps in the front of the folders. (the whole sheets are in hanging folders already but not organized) This is probably what I will do when I get "a round to it"!

I keep my cardstock in hanging folders, one per color. In each hanging folder are two file folders. The back one has full and half sheets, the front one has scraps. I use a lot more of my scraps since they're right there when I reach for a color.

I have all my SU paper in hanging files. And I keep the scraps right there with the color. I used to keep the smaller scraps in a box but I discovered that many times I would cut up a larger piece only to later find a smaller scrap that would have worked.

I keep everything! I'll use the markers on the tiny scraps to test before stamping on a big piece.

I've got all my paper sorted by color families in the plastic 3 drawer pull out bins that you get like at Walmart. However, I've found them at the dollar store every now and then. I keep the scrap paper on my desk in front of me in the box that my SU ink pads came in. It is just small enough so I have to use that before I cut into a full sheet or my scrap box gets too full. I've thought of the hanging folders, but I like to keep it in the plastic bins because it is still in sight, I can look right in and take a "visual" inventory and dust wont get to it. And they stack really well...

I have all my SU 8.5x11 in hanging file folders separated by color. All scraps are in quart-sized baggies in front of full sheets.

12x12 (I don't have very much yet) are in drawers. Scraps, again, are in quart baggies on top. These are kinda mixed at the moment -- because I don't really have enough to get confused!

I always grab for my scraps first. My "rule" is that it has to be at least 1 x 3/8. That's just so if I need to punch something that small (circle/square/heart) I don't have to waste a larger piece. I don't always stick to this rule, but it's good to go by.

I guess I should say that my scraps range from 1x3/8 to 1/2 sheet of paper (8.5x11 or 12x12). Whatever can fit in the baggie goes in there. Anything bigger gets put in front/on top of the others.

HTH!

I have 2 of the Divided Storage Boxes from Cropper Hopper with envelopes (I think they're 6x9) filed in there and labeled by color.

I have a hard time throwing anything away too. About the only thing I throw away are the strips that are too skinny to use for anything.

I don't have a lot of 12x12 scraps, but I keep the ones that I do have in the Sterilite 12x12 drawers with the 12x12 cardstock and paper.

here is what thuskins wrote

My SU papers are organized in hanging files, each file has a page protector for
large scraps and baggie for little. I think I'll be changing this to organize
scraps by color families soon but for now it works. My Non su scraps are a
mess. They are somewhat organized by color in page protecters in a binder but
it is such a mess.

jenmaca ansewered this:

I have all of my 8.5x11 SU cardstock in part of a file drawer in our
office/craft room. Since I have a hard time telling some of the colors apart
(mainly the blues unless I see them all together), I keep it sorted by color
family. Each family has a box bottom hanging file pocket. The scraps have
their own file pocket, and I separate them by color family in individual manilla
folders. The scrap folder is in the front of the file cabinet, so I remember to
check there first if I just need a piece of something.

12x12 is another story all together. LOL. I have all that sorted by color
family and brand in a Cropper Hopper file cart with removable class tote. Large
scraps (like a half sheet or bigger) go back with the full sheets. Anything
smaller goes into the 8.5x11 scrap storage system.

I use inexpensive 3 5/8" x 6 1/2" envelopes to put small scraps in, sorted by
color (greens, blues, reds, etc.) I tuck the envelope flap inside so I can
easily stuff the envelope full of scraps. I place the envelpes file style in a
shoebox and keep in my desk drawer so I can easily access it. I also keep
another shoebox in the same drawer for larger pieces and I just stand them up so
I can sort through them. I try to keep like colors together. When these two
boxes are full, I just pitch scraps into a third box and use it to refill the
other two. Works for me! Smoothie

I have a "stamping corner" in my kitchen. All my stuff is on a computer desk in
the corner. It's got a shelf on top and I have all my paper there in stacking
trays. The top tray is where I keep all my scraps but they aren't organized so
I have to dig to find stuff. It's fun though because I'll find a little scrap
of something cool and then my mind starts buzzing thinking of something to do
with it. I have my blue flowered Kleenex box from my desk at work there and my
Colgate box with the cool hologram paper on it just waiting for something.....

I keep my 8.5 CS in hanging folders in manilla folders which are grouped into
hanging file folders with "edges" on the side to prevent the scraps from falling
out. The file folders hang in plastic hanging file folder containers. I have
one container per color family, another for WW, VV, and BB and another for the
in colors, the rest of the neutrals, gold, silver, etc. My scraps are in the
same folder as full size sheets in the front of the folders, so that I always
remember to use them first.

This system does take up a bit of space, but it makes finding the right piece of
scrap so much easier for me.

campstamper03 :

THis thread is great. I've been stamping for about 10 years and have now gotten
my very own "stamp" room thanks to my DH, and as I keep reorganizing things I'm
trying to make it better and easier. You gals have given me several things to
try. I'm a little different then most of you regarding scraps, when I'm
stamping, I first go to the scraps and see what I can use before I go to larger
sizes of paper and I use a lot of scraps in my stamping. Keep the ideas coming.

Creative Memories sells a 12x10 accordian folder called a Filemate.
This is what I use. I have files for red, blue, green, yellow, orange, pink,
purple, neutrals, and patterned paper. Scraps get filed by color. Since i
don't use SU paper exclusively, it doesn't make sense for me to file by SU color
families. This has worked great for me for ages - it's manageable and very
portable.

I suppose that cascading piles on the right side of my desk doesn't really count as "storage" does it?!?

***************
I use manilla file folders in my file cabinet. In the front of each folder are
the scraps. In the back are the full sheets. That way when I need something of
any size I can pull the whole folder and bring it to the table. Quick and easy
in and out of the folder.

I'm such a BAD example. Mine is called a cardboard box! LOL! Probably a SU! box. Seriously, I am so weird about my cs. I keep it in the original cello bags (well, now that the cs doesn't come in cello bags I had to buy some) and put it in a paper organizer, the kind that is a box on its side with horizontal shelves. Some pieces of scrap go back into the cello bags, usually card front size or bigger. Then, the rest get chucked into a cardboard box under my table. I actually do use stuff from there sometimes.

Right now, all of my scraps are kept in a drawer in a utility cart, but I think I'm going to go with the folders, since I already have all of my CS in hanging file folders anyway, then I just have to add a scraps folder in the front.

Thanks to everyone for sharing their ideas!!!

I have an accordian file for my scraps. I separate the scraps into the sections. For example, I have one section for stamped scraps, one to three for light neutrals, another for the In Color scraps, then the rest of the color families. I even have a section for some of the retired colors I use for family cards.

I always check my folder first as I keep 1/2 and 1/4 sheets in there too.

As far as how small to keep? Well, I've got a bunch of 1/2 in. strips that I think I'm going to do something with. I even keep some of the 1/4 inch strips with the same idea. Every now and then I go through it and clean some out, but mostly the folder grows.

Oh, I forgot the 1/2 - 1" wide strips! I have a Tupperware Super Oval container which has all these strips in. They are all just piiled in there - no order!

My SU paper is in hanging file folders alphabetically by color - my half sheets are placed in the front of its file folder. My scraps of any significant size are in a 3-ring binder containing Avery clear sheet protectors. The protectors I use are designed for a larger quantity of paper than regular ones. While most colors have their own sleeve some of my more seldom used colors share one. I organize these into reds, blues, greens etc. My really small scraps are tossed into a sturdy decorative box.
