...i will NEVER do business with oriental trading again...
...long story short: put in order for the modular scrapping cubes and a few other things; over $500...; when i got the order summary the cubes were out of stock (the order total was then $50 and change) so i cancelled the entire order immediately...WELLLLLLLLL...the charge for over $500 is still being held on my card (only 3 business days, they say...2 of the 4 people i talked to blamed the bank)...i don't understand why that charge wasn't removed the NEXT day (since their accounting dept leaves at 4 pm CDT)...i have spent loads of time on the phone with oriental and my bank trying to get this worked out...they (oriental) have definitely lost my business...imo it shouldn't take more than 1 business day to remove a charge for a cancelled order...there...i feel better...thanks......
I have had this happen, and it actually does have to do with the bank. Sometimes it takes several days for a hold to disappear. I'm so sorry this happened to you!!
I have to say, in my experience, I've never received a credit from ANY store that quickly. It's always taken several days. I'm not sure why it takes companies longer to issue credits? Perhaps someone who works for a retail company could chime in and explain it.
We deal with the authorization holds at my work. It can take a few days for that to drop BUT WE MUST INITIATE the cancel for that to drop. Then it takes only up to 2-4 days to fall off.
That is terrible what they did. I hope you get it worked out
It is the BANK. It's not the merchant. They will take your money in a heartbeat, but try to get a credit and it is usually 3-5 business days to show up on your account, depending on the bank.
I use to work at a Bank so I know this as fact.
You could order something and be charged. Within five minutes you call back and cancel the order. The merchant will issue you a credit immediately. The bank will not credit you immediately. Eventhough everything is done by computers.
It stinks!!! I know. But I just wanted you to be mad at the right people. Sorry for the aggravation.
(If you're going to spend that much money on cubes, you should consider Best Craft Organizers. Of course, you might like the bookcase look more than the drawers. Do you have a local Michael's that would order them for you)?

I've also had the same thing happen. Many phone calls & lots of frustration led right back to the bank. It's just not a fast process. Such a stress, I know.
Sorry this happened to you...a suggestion, use the 50% coupons at Michaels whenever you can to purchase the storage cubes or take advantage of 50% scrapbook storage sale. They are usually only $15 a piece doing this. I have purchased 6 of them this way. I won't pay full price for them.
...thanks for the explanantions and well wishes...it is very frustrating...i have ordered the store in style cubes from create for less...our local michael's didn't have a lot of the cubes in stock and i (of course) wanted an entire set now...;)...
Yep. don't blame the merchant. I used my bank card at Archivers once - they transaction was wrong so they cancelled the charge right away and did another transaction - took 4 days for the first charge to credit back to my account. even though it was cancelled minutes after the charge was made.

...frustrating at best...the bank blamed oriental (who had not contacted them yet about the cancelled order) and oriental blamed the bank...bad thing is the bank didn't make anymore money off me because my card was tied up with the charges...(new card, low limit)...ARGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH...BUT my new storage cubes will be here on thursday and i can start working on the new craft space...always a fun thing......
My husband is in banking, and he explained that when I get gas at 7-11, they put a $50 hold on my card, no matter how much I spend (usually half of that.) And it doesn't come off for a couple of days. So I would blame them, too.
Most cards don't hold 50.00 for a 1.00 charge they hold the equivalent of the the charge for 3 days, at least all the cards I use personally and professionally to purchase with. As a vendor I don't get the money my customers spend for 2-3 days when my customer use a credit card, it takes that many days to be released for me, however if I have other money available I can immediately refund my customer for whatever reason.
walmart/ the bank do the same thing....
my solution?
i now pay in cash... if i decide i don't want the item, the salesgirl can just hand me the cash back, then and there

...good idea...i guess i just haven't realized all these years that this was a common practice...

Just a heads up - when you stay at a hotel and they scan your card at check-in, but you pay with cash when you leave - that also initiates a hold on those funds that can take a week to be released. Which really bites if your credit card is also your debit card and you wanted access to that money!
If the items were out of stock, why did OTC charge it in the first place? Or does the hold automatically go on when you submit the order?
...kind of strange, isn't it...they run the charge and THEN you get the order summary that tells you your items are not in stock...that's what made me so mad...why DO they go ahead and run your charge when what you want is out of stock ???...
They must have real time credit card processing. Most credit card processors offer real time and manual processing to vendors. Of course with a company as big as Oriental I am sure they would do real time just because of the sheer quantity they must have. If you do manual you must literally type all the information, address, credit card number, name, expiration date and process the charge. It is handy to have that option though for preorders etc, so that the customer isn't billed until the order ships.
