Default I have a question...

I just have to ask... Not directed at any one person but I have seen this numerous times. Someone asks a question, then someone answers it.. then there might be 3 or 4 people that answer with the same exact answer. Out of curiosity, why? If I look at a question and it has already been answered, I pass on it instead of repeating the same answer over and over. If anyone can help me understand this, I would greatly appreciate it!!

It really is cut and dry. The person adding their 2 cents after the question has already been answered is not adding any more info to the post than the first person. Here is a generic example:

For example Someone asks "What page can I find the build a cupcake punch in the SU! mini catalog"

So I reply that it is on page 22.

Then someone else comes alon"You can find it on page 22 of the mini catalog"

And again someone else comes along and says, it is on page 22.

Why? Why do people do this? Am i missing something? Thanks

Take a look at the time of the responses. Sometimes multiple people are replying at the same time and someone else is a faster typist. I know that happened to me recently.

Ok. Now that makes sense and I totally understand when that happens. I am talking about a cut and dry scenario. Someone posts a question. Someone answers a question, then hours later someone answer the same question with the same answer.

I think that sometimes people read the first post and just hit the reply button, forgetting to scroll down to read the replies to see that someone else has already answered the question.

ok.. that makes sense.. maybe they don't read the responses... What if there is only 1 question and 1 answer... Would they still not read the response if there was only one? and not a page full of answers??

Well, I myself wouldn't, but I am always surprised by others, kwim? LOL! I think sometimes people just get excited that they know the answer and quickly hit that response button.

I am with you on that one.. I wouldn't either... Thanks for the reply!!

I guess why I ask is that when I post the answer and someone else comes along it makes me say "hmmm was my answer not good enough?"

I with all the above answers. And yes, I am posting another answer.

What is really funny is when someone resurrects a really old thread that has dozens and dozens of the same answers, from sometimes years ago, and then posts another "same answer."

Ah, the wonders and fun of the internets! What did we all do with our time before we had computers?

I have to admit I did it this morning. Someone asked a question and someone answered it. I saw the question and when I glanced at the response I didn't realize she provided the same information I was going to. I only glanced at it quickly and, obviously, not carefuly enough. I felt pretty silly when I saw my mistake.

On the other hand, it's better that a question gets answered twice than not at all, right? ;) I get bummed when someone asks a legitimate question and no one responds.

I guess why I ask is that when I post the answer and someone else comes along it makes me say "hmmm was my answer not good enough?"

:^) I was reading along and thinking. . . yep, I see this all the time, too.

But then you hit a chord with this comment because now I get it. I have felt the same way ~ answer the question, someone else repeats it, and then what's even worse is one or several people after that gush all over their answer. That's a bit of a blow. I don't know why it happens either.

All I can think of is the example of a good teacher. A good teacher recognizes that sometimes a simple turn of a phrase, or slightly differently worded explanation, can make a concept "click" with a particular student. In the teaching scenario, it's pretty impressive because the teacher is usually tuned in to a student and has a real gift for striking the right note with them.

.... that may all be stretching it a bit here though, LOL. I chalk it up to ~~ nutty things happen on SCS :^) . Just don't take it personally.

Speaking of resurrecting threads, Bugga, I saw one the other day that came back to haunt me -- It was from a LONG time ago, and I was reading my own posts and questions like they were from a total stranger, LOL!!! I didn't even remember writing any of it! And it didn't sound like me either. I think I was possessed or something

I thought threads dropped off the edge of SCSland at some point. . . isn't there a statute of limitations?!

I guess I have never really thought about it. I am wondering why it bothers you, if you just skip over it if you see it has been answered.

I like to think that there are just alot of us who on Splitcoast that like it when we are helped so we try to help others.

Unless of coarse you are the person who posted the question, then get 10 emails with the same answer. Or it is a month later and someone sends the 27th "look on page 22". That is a little frustrating.

I have noticed some people just answer the question while others provide links as well as the same answer. I like the links answers. I always have liked shortcuts though!

I haven't read the replies above so forgive me if this had already been said.

I've already answered someone and then I posted my message only to find out that someone else had posted at the same time as me. I didn't see their message until after I had posted mine which refreshes the page. Hope I explained that okay.

Naw, your answer was fine.

I try not to read too much into things.... ESPECIALLY on the Internet.

Of course, I've learned that over the years of BEING on the Internet. ;)

And thanks for the information on the Build a Cupcake SU die. I was WONDERING on what page it was!

I'd prefer a dozen correct answers to my question, than a single incorrect or unhelpful response that shows they didn't pay attention.

Happened to me today in fact. Emailed two people - "SoandSo wants to do X program, do we have resources to set it up?" One responded by saying, "They can find a number of programs that do that on the internet!" No kidding, they found one and want our help with it! If he had read my question properly, he wouldn't have answered the way he did. arrrrrgh!

It doesn't just happen on SCS...I've been on so many different types of message boards besides stamping and scrapping ones....it happens on ALL of them.

I try to read through the answers before stating something again....but I'm sure I've stepped into the world of multiple answers on a thread from time to time.

I do, wish, though, that if people want to participate in a thread, they have the courtesy to read the entire discussion first. You know, in IRL, when you are talking to someone, but they are looking at someone else across the room....how it makes you feel. I think it is similar on the internet when that happens. The people who have invested in the discussion are just passed over.

But, hey, stuff happens and in the end....SCS is all good!! ;-)

I guess I don't worry too much about that sort of thing. After I became ill with medical conditions that cause dizziness and brain fog, I am more understanding about little things. There is no telling what sort of goofy answer I might give on any certain day, but I don't let it keep me from participating.
I figure some people may be half asleep, need a cup of coffee or are just don't have time to read all the posts, which I can certainly understand if a thread has fifteen pages of posts.
I guess we all have our little peeves, but I try not to let little stuff bother me. Although, I have moody days sometimes, so I can't promise anything. :p

Lots of great points!! Glad I asked! Thanks for all the info!

Ted you are funny!! Thanks for your funny comment!

This definitely does not bother me to a point that it affects my outlook on life, please don't get me wrong! I don't sweat the small stuff, trust me! I was just curious!! I have more important things in life to worry about than someone answering the same questions over and over. It was just my curiosity. I know many of us have different opinions on things and I wanted to see some other points of view! Thanks for all the feedback! Definitely some good info!! I didn't even think about someone trying to up their # of posts!!

For one, I appreciate multiple answers to a question even if it's the same answer. I guess the way I see it is kind of like a "vote" for a particular thing. If I see multiple people answer with the same idea, product, store, etc., I figure it must be good if that many people think of it as their answer.

I totally understand that. Yes if we are asking opinions, multiple answers are great! But I was talking more about cut and dry situations, like what page is something on. Multiple answers for this sort of thing is not really necessary. Unless the original reply was incorrect. Then maybe there is a need for multiple answers.

Sometimes I begin to answer a question which requires more explanation than just "page 22" and at times I re-read it before submitting and have to do some editing to it to make it more clear. Or I get a phone call in the middle of my typing and then have to go back to it. Or I do a bookmark or Google search and someone is faster than me. I then submit and I see someone as already answered and my reply is like 20 minutes after someone has already answered. I feel like people are going to think I didn't read the replies before I gave my answer. Oh well, it happens.

Default Did you ever get my money order??

Just curious. You've heard of lost mail showing up years and decades later. I hope it shows up or my record is ruined. I can't tell you how many times I have bragged that I have never had anything lost in the mail and how much I love our postal system. Been sending cash through the mail for years and the first time I listen to my husband (be more responsible he says) and send a money order - it gets lost. Crazy.

I've actually wondered the same thing! ;)
When I asked DH (it was a VERY long thread, with LOTS of the same answer) he said that it's because a lot of people want to get their # of posts up. (he spends lots of time on his own boards - manly stuff, you know!)
I couldn't agree, because really, what good would that do you in real life?

I think the reason for so many duplicate answers to the original question is that a lot of people simply don't take the time to read through all the posts.

They just think, "I've got it!" and hit the reply button. Yes, I myself have been guilty of that, and I love to read.
