I used 12x12 albums for years, but finally tried 8x8 about a year and a half ago and have found that i like using the smaller size much more. I found it difficult to fill up a 12x12 page.. i think 12x12 is more practical if you have a LOT of photos you want to scrap, especially of similar subject matter to group together, like lots of photos of children or a vacation... with the 8x8 I like using fewer but more meaningful photos... with the 12x12 i felt like i was just trying to fill the space with more schtuff.. i think the 8x8 is definitely less overwhelming, and therefore more fun.
I don't think the inspiration for a scrapbook page HAS to come from a photo... You could use a ticket stub or something similar from an event and then on the page write a story about what happened, what was it that made it special... It's easier to use photos, "a picture is worth a thousand words".. but if don't have a physical photograph to use and u have room to write a thousand words, then i say go for it... ;)
Around the same time I started using the smaller albums, I also started getting into card-making more, thanks to a friend! The quickness of a card is definitely gratifying. I don't know how good I am at either, but they're both enjoyable..
