Yup, sounds tonal to me! Actually you can use Priority Mail envelopes and boxes for free but the rate to overseas is not the same as priority within the US and I'm surprised that the PO even let them use the US envelopes!

It wasn't going overseas but to Canada, if that makes a difference. I am in Germany but I have a Cdn military PO Box.

Agree. 100%.
Many people have said that the buyer has agreed to the shipping price before bidding and therefore buyers have the responsibility to know what they are agreeing to pay for. Keep in mind though that only the seller is in the position to know whether the quoted costs is close to reasonable. The buyer is at the mercy of the seller''s quote.
Regarding the OP's question, I don't think a $2 overage is excessive but it sounds as if the seller was a bit snippy in response to your inquiry. Perhaps she felt guilty because she knew she overcharged you.
In light of the higher invoice price than what the OP agreed to, overall, it does not sound as if this seller behaved properly.

Overseas was probably just jargon to mean international. Even though Canada and Mexico aren't overseas (and really neither is south america- just over canal!) they still get the same sort of postage difficulties, since it's all international.

The fact is Sellers are going to charge whatever they want for shipping. Its up to the buyers to bid on the auction or not. If the auctions with unfair shipping costs were ignored (or if ebay really cracked down on those sellers), then there wouldn't be a problem. If I feel the shipping is unfair, I don't even think about bidding.

I recently bid on a guillotine cutter and the shipping was $25. I knew that going into the auction and really didn't feel that it was all that bad because the cutter is very heavy and the box for it would be rather spendy. The cutter starting price was also lower which made the shipping better. I won the auction and the seller offered a lower shipping price without me asking. How do you like that!! Saved me $10 by going parcel post instead of priority.

In my experience, international shipping costs can vary enormously between sellers for exactly the same item. I don't know if this is through 'profiteereing' or a genuine lack of knowledge of the costs involved. I was charged $9 for shipping snap stamps that had 27 cents postage on the envelope when it arrived - I would say that is blatant profiteering! I don't mind paying for packing materials etc but gas annoys me - if you have to make a special journey to post it, then don't sell it! Or move to the UK and pay $9 a gallon, then complain about the price of gas. As already said, you just have to bear the shipping costs in mind when you bid. Happy shopping!! Claire

What country did that come from that it cost 27 cents? To mail a letter that is only 1 oz costs 41 cents! To post snap stamps for that little is insane!

Ok this reminds me of a couple months ago when I paid $60 shipping for an online professional course that cost $500. I received the materials via UPS after about two weeks and I was shocked to find only 5 pieces of paper in the UPS envelope. Those pieces of paper contained the password to get into the online course and access to all the online manuals, which I had to print off myself.

Well I was upset at first, but this was a course that I really needed and the organization that I purchased it from is the only one who offers it. And when I signed up for it, I was completely okay with paying the total $560. But when I actually saw that it only cost them a few bucks for shipping, it just really made me angry.

In the end, I keep telling myself that the total price is what matters to me. However they want to break it down is their issue. They base their shipping on the total cost of their product...and most of what they sell are professional books, so I understand that. But I thought the online course should have been an exception (especially when a huge section of the course deals with Ethics!). Again...in the end, I am happy with what I received...and that's all that really matters to me.
