Dye ink issues
Hi all. Hoping someone could please tell me why I am having issues with Dye Ink. I am using SU inks for a background and then stamping a solid image in Hero Arts Dye Ink black on the top. I am also stamping onto SU W/white CS. I find that the inks don't dry and the black then smudges. Also sometimes when I put my stamp to the CS it moves giving a shadow outline. I also sometimes fine that even after a couple of hours the black ink still smudges if touched. Any advise would be much appreciated. Oh I am stamping with Lavinia Stamps which are clear stamps. Thanks Kim
I have found many inks (including many SU inks) need to “sit and dry” for a bit to avoid smudges. Occasionally I’ll ‘Heat set’ them with an embossing tool but then paper starts to warp, fold, etc.
The only ink that doesn’t need a time out to dry before handling is Tim Holtz Distress Inks. I’ve had pretty good luck of late with Momento Inks, too.
I've never had a problem with stamping over SU dye inks, but if I use pigment inks for the background, I need to let them dry before stamping over it. Are you using dye ink for both background and overstamping? I'm wondering if anyone else has experience with the Hero Arts black ink because my only experience with Hero Arts inks are blue and gray colors. I find that they don't stamp solid images well at all and are rather transparent. My favorite black ink is either Versafine or Memento ink. I've tried a lot of black ink pads over the years and these are the ones that work the best for me.
Hope someone else has more info or suggestions.
Karen
Hero ink has more than one black ink. You said you are using the dye....are you sure it is not the hybrid? That could have pigment qualities and not dry or stamp the same way. It can be confusing. Companies don't always label pads well.
Are you hand stamping or using a platform like the misti? I can have problems hand stamping with slight shimmy that causes blurring. are these line art or solid stamps?
Are you prepping the clear stamps before using them? We want to rub them with something so the ink clings to it better. This can be rubbing it with a cloth, an eraser, inking and stamping it off first...there can be production "stuff" on the surface. I tend to rub them on my clothes since I am usually in tshirts and jeans.. You only have to do it once when they are new.

The hybrid inks are fast-drying, so that wouldn't be the issue.
What about heat setting the SU inks before stamping over them? You can use a heat tool or lay a paper towel over the panel and set with a hot, dry iron.
I’d maybe suspect the paper not the ink. Do you have a similar issue stamping with those inks on colored cardstock? I know SU has recently changed their white cs,
