Smile ?/discussion re frame size for the framed word art in gallery

I have seen so many of the lovely examples of framed word art in the gallery and was wondering do you create and then try it find a frame that fits or go buy frames and then create?

I'm especially thinking about the ones that look long/rectangle size. Off the top of my head these don't seem like a common ready made frame size or at least a size that can be purchased at a reasonable cost.

I was hoping to have some discussion on this!! Anyone?

A few months ago the Target $ Spot had all kinds of frames. I think the size alot of people are using is 4 x 10. I have 4 of them waiting to find time to stamp and might need to find a few longer frames to fit what I have in mind to stamp

I was just out looking for frames this mornng. We live in a small town, and I didn't find anything I liked. Guess I'll have to drive into the big city. I did do a couple last week that say FROSTY, and I used 5x7 frames which were barely long enough. But I want to do a couple that say WELCOME, so I need something longer. I'd love to hear what others are using.

I like to find frames with nice mats. otherwise, the stuff gets smooshed! The 6x6 joy frame in my gallery has ribbon on the side 'cause it was too thick, and the glass cracked a bit.

I like the look of 8x10 with a 5x7 opening. The silver ones in my gallery are really super deep, and the words Adri wanted to do were a little longer than I would have chosen, so we just went over the opening!

Oh - and to answer your question, I take the frame first and then work with what size I have.

I got 5x12 frames at walmart. The are not with the regular frames but with the value frames in an aisle. They have a mat to use with 2 4x6 pics. They cost between 2.50 and 3.00 depending on what the frame is made of.

Argh! I was at mine today and saw nothing! I spent all afternoon on this frame hunt and didn't bag a thing!LOL I'm DYING to make these for gifts and LOVE the look of the long ones. After reading this thread, I guess the ones posted aren't as big or long as they look. More info from posters would be helpful.;-) This is THE best site with THE MOST creative people! I don't know which I'm addicted to more, this site or stamping!!!LOL

These are the nicest ones that I found as well. I did a couple in frames that were 8 x 10, but I had to put a lot of other stuff in the frame to fill it up, KWIM? I start with a frame, then measure the frame and plan from there, deciding what size I will cut my mat so that I know exactly how much space I have left for artwork. I also use dimensionals or pop-up glue dots to attach mat to cardstock to give me a bit more room for embelishments under the glass. HTH!
