Default Cut down embossing folder?

I managed to buy an 8x8 embossing folder without realizing it would not fit in my Big Shot. Ugh. I love it, and it would be a hassle to return.

Has anyone cut down an embossing folder? What did you use to do it?

I have cut apart embossing folders before. I remember doing this with a SU Finial ef to make 3 separate border stamps. I used some heavy duty Fiskars scissors to make the cuts, and as I recall I cut through only one thickness at time. I believe I drew cutting lines on the outside of the folder with a sharpie marker so that I would know where to cut. Does this make sense?

Not knowing the design/pattern repeat on the ef you want to cut down, I would suggest that you study the design before doing anything else. Look to see if there is a design (like a whole flower) that would look weird if cut in half. You might draw lines around the design on one side and then do the same thing on the other side and see if you are close to where it needs to be to fit in the Big Shot. Keep in mind that you don't need to have a nice straight line on each side of ef , like the commercially manufactured ones have. It will work in the machine just fine if the borders are totally goofy looking. Your main concern is to have a nice looking embossing pattern after you make the cuts.

Hope I shared this in a way that makes sense. Good luck with the trim job. It's not physically difficult to do, but boy does it ever take guts to make the first cut! ;)

Yes. My dad clamped it to his workbench and cut it with a utility knife along a sturdy ruler. We took an inch off of each side.

I ended up cutting it with a ginormous, old-school paper cutter that we have at work. It is 2ft x 2ft, so I was able to open the folder and cut an inch from each side. I didn't trust myself to cut through the thick plastic with a scissors or utility knife. It's a tiny bit crooked on one side, but otherwise OK.

Good idea Krista! Using a paper cutter was a brilliant idea.
Blessings.

I used normal scissors, and a lot of strength.

I cut my folders all the time. I have used scissors, a rotary cutter and my lever paper cutter. All work well if you are patient!
