I am looking to replace my current lights--one an old piano lamp, the other an old desk lamp. I want one that has "natural" lighting. Recommendations and what not-to-buy would be appreciated. Thanks!
I was going to say that I would recommend an Ottlite. And I do, because it is a good natural lighting option. But the fixtures are really expensive, and I don't suggest buying them at full price...only at 50% off!
However I will add another suggestion...and that is to purchase an Ottlite bulb with a regular base and put that in one of your current fixtures. (I have not done that, because I did buy a couple of their fixtures at close-out prices.)
Here's another vote for Ottlite! I agree that they are pricey so look for a good sale! I also have learned to be careful about leaving my craft room with the lights on. Replacement bulbs for Ottlite are expensive when you are lighting up an empty desk
I love my Ottlite! I got mine when I happened to walk into Joann's and found out they were doing inventory and had marked down a couple of the older styles. No joke, I got them for something like 75% off! ONLY because they were an older design...but the light works great! I use mine on a daily basis and have had it for going on 3 years now and still haven't had to change the bulb! Love it!

I have 2 Ottlites and love them. I've replaced the bulb just once in over 10 years of owning them (and I have left them burning for hours at an empty desk - oops!).
If you are considering Ottlites, be sure the kind of bulb they will take is a normal-base bulb. The link to Michael's posted above has a normal base, AND it's 50% off, so down to the price of a normal light bulb.
The Ottlite I bought on a great sale takes a bulb that is $17.00
I did a little more searching and from what I can tell, the floor lamps with magnifiers only come with the 18w bulb. So, yes, I’ll end up paying more for replacement bulbs, but I need the magnifier cause my reading glasses aren’t enough anymore and it has to be a floor model cause I don’t have enough room on my crafting desk for a lamp.

I was the one who found and suggested them a few years back and am using them in other non crafting areas as well now, great alternative to not buying a whole new fixture. I bought them at Lowes or Home Depot, sorry not sure which.

Are you looking for individually addressable LEDs you can program with an Arduino etc or simple solid RGBs? Im not sure about RGBs but if you want the addressable ones I'd recommend WS2812b's, they're pretty cheap online, can get a variety of waterproof levels at different price points.

Another vote for Ott Lights/bulbs...I have 3...a floor model inherited from my mother who used it for sewing/quilting for more than 10 years and I have had it now 14 years and not had to replace a bulb yet. I have the flip up on which I keep on my nightstand table....I used it to sew with before receiving the floor model but now I keep it to read in bed with. The third one was originally on my craft desk but is now on my office desk. The only bulb I have replaced is in the flip up lamp. I had used it 15 years before I needed to do so.

I probably should not post this here but we all just need a good laugh in these times......last night we drove by the neighbor's home and in their window with their beautiful Christmas lights was a .........leg lamp...just like the one in the Christmas movie. We about died laughing and drove by again just to see it. Probably not a good choice for a crafting lamp, though.
I have two of these LED Ott Lights. I love the adjustable gooseneck and that is rechargeable. And that I can easily move it from my computer desk to my bedside.
I used them when going to crops and in here in my craft/office room. I LOVE the daylight lighting. It makes it so much easier for me to match papers, ink, etc. And, as so many others have said, the bulb seems to last forever.
What I don't like about this particular light is: 1) Takes up precious desk space 2) Turn on and off by lifting or lowering the bulb portion.
I would love to replace them with an Ottlite floor lamp that has a magnifying glass, since my old eyes have problems seeing intricate details. The only thing holding me back is lack of space. I craft at my corner computer table in a teeny tiny room, I would have to reorganize everything to make it work for me. It needs to be in a spot that would make the lamp both accessible and easy to adjust over my papercrafting area.
I really like the idea above, where someone suggested an Ottlite bulb in a standard light fixture. It is, after all, the daylight bulb that makes these Ottlite lamps worth their cost.
Ottlite is awesome and has a standing reputation for being a good lamp. I lucked out and found a standing floor Ottlite at Tuesday Morning last year for about $30. Too good of a deal to pass up and worth every penny.
My folding desktop Ottlite's
bulb just burned out tonight and I can't craft without it so I went online to buy a replacement bulb. Thought I had a spare, but I must have used it a couple of years back. I'm pretty shocked at the price of a replacement bulb for my little desktop lamp..argh. I did order a replacement, but am wondering if anyone knows of generics out there ?
My craft table is small, so now I'm considering getting a floor lamp, and just using my table top one when I travel. LOVE my Ottlite, but not the prices!

I don’t know if any generic bulbs that would go in an Ottlite lamp. But if you’re gonna get a floor lamp, you might consider getting an inexpensive one and putting a daylight bulb in it.

Good idea Pam. I priced a couple of Ottlite floor lamps today at Michael's crafts...eek!

My DD and DH got me a Ottlite Floor lamp with magnifier for my b-day in Dec. it didn’t fit in my craft space how I thought it would so my hubby cut a small U shaped hole in my desk top so that the lamp could come up thru there and be over my work space. (i think I may have mentioned this in another thread.) If I had to choose between spending money on the Ottlite and a less expensive light with other crafting goodies, I think I would have gone with the latter. Especially since I’ve since seen how much brighter an LED bulb is vs a regular one.
