One of the money saving tips on another thread mentioned buying white organdy ribbon and then using an ink pad to dye it the color you needed. I'm just wondering what the ribbon would look like when you are finished--are the colors bright? How messy is the process? Can you get a even color or does it look mottled? If you've colored white organdy ribbon with your ink pad, would you please post a photo or a card that used it. It just sounds too good to be true :?
I don't have a picture to post (I'm at work) but I can answer your questions:
Are the colors bright? It depends on the color - I'll run it over the pad unti I get the shade I want. It isn't super bright - but accents the colors you are using very nicely.
How messy is the process? I get the finger holding the ribbon on the pad inky but it washes off. I let the ribbon dry for 10 minutes under my desk light and have no oter problems.
Can you get a even color or does it look mottled? My color is even but it took a few trys to get the method down.
It is a selling point at shows - you always have the color you need because you can make it yourself whenever you need it.

don't have my digital with me so can't post a picture but you gotta try it, the color is light but good. Just take the ribbon run it across the pad putting pressure on with your finger and presto, color. Drys immediately, the only mess is your finger so you could wear gloves but it really was not all that bad and it really helped me in a pinch. I LOVE IT!!
I have never had any luck with this. I find that the ribbon looks pale, or lightly stained, but never looks really vibrant as if you were to buy the colored ribbon from SU. I also find that the ink takes long to dry on the ribbon, and got all over my hands, and on my project.
I'd also be interested to know if anyone has ever gotten this to work, becuse I am at a loss! I just buy a couple of spools of different color ribbon every month!
I do the ink pad thing with the brayer. I did it at my last stamp camp and it was a hit! It's not quite as messy especially if you give it a minute to dry before touching it. We did it with 2 soft subtles colors so I'm not sure about how bright a bright color would be. I specifically bought the white because I didn't know what color I wanted to use. At least my customers had a couple of options. Funny thing....they didn't even do the color I did! They are sooo creative!

I haven't tried dyeing the White Organdy yet because I hosted a Ribbon Swap so I got all the colors! However, I have dyed the Gingham Ribbon. I use a 1/4 sponge to hold the ribbon firmly against the pad while I pull it through with the other hand. By using the sponge, I don't get ink all over my fingers and I think using the sponge makes for a more even pressure on the ribbon too. Hope this helps.
I have not used the ink pad. But I have used the brush tip of the marker on the gross grain ribbon. I liked the way it turned out. I needed tempting torquois, and that is exactly what I got. I did have to turn the ribbon over to make sure the edges were even...but I think with a little practice I might not even have to do this.
I was taught to wrapa piece of regular old scotch tape around the finger you use to hold the ribbon down. This has alwasy worked great for me and has 2 advantages, 1)your finger does not get inked...you just peel off the tape when you are done and you have a clean finger, and 2) the scotch tape is slick so the ribbon glides more smoothly than it does over your finger so you have less color blotching and instead you get a uniformly colored ribbon.
OK, so I've been playing around this afternoon with ink and ribbon
I think I'd color white grosgrain with markers again if I needed another color and it was a small project. It was easy, not too messy and the only drawback was that you had to do touchups on the edges.
The organdy was another matter. The color was blotchy and uneven. The edges seemed to take the color differently than the center. The color was not as bright as the purchased ribbon. I think it just looked tacky. I would not recommend coloring the organdy ribbon.
So do I get a blue ribbon on my Science Fair project?
While I do think it is easier to just buy it alreaqdy the color you want, SU does not offer all the colors of ribbon. Also, I know I could not afford all of the colors at once. I have used it in the past in a pinch or for a color I cannot order. Some colors turn out better than the others!
