Apparently, coloring books for adults is now a huge trend. I saw quite a few at the entrance of my local Barnes and Noble this week, and then read the article today that confirmed it:
Yes, I ordered a set from HSN during their 24-hour craft day event. They are small enough to use for cards, and/or to carry in a purse or tote bag. The cardstock they are printed on is heavy, and it is supposed to work with most coloring media. I'm planning on giving them a try today. I agree about the stress relief. Coloring has worked for me since I was a little girl.
There are dozens of them on Amazon too. I saw a couple in my local supermarket, and grabbed them. I have to say that I'm not a confident colourer at all, I think I'd enjoy it more if I got better results. Which I know is only down to practice. As I have to have surgery soon, with a 10-14 day stay in hospital, I've got myself together a half dozen of these now, and packed them in a bag with a bunch of Promarkers, so with all that time on my hands, I can use it to practice my colouring!

I bought one way back in 2002. Never saw any others. Then I bought another at my local stamp store last summer. I had a blast coloring with gel and metallic pens, but it was very hard to find any other coloring books for adults.
I did buy The Magic Garden at Michael's in March. I was thrilled.
Then I walked into Barnes and Nobel this last Saturday and was blown away by the different displays of coloring books. I also saw the article in Parade section of the sundar paper about the trend.
For he first tine in my life I was ahead of a trend haha! I love sitting on my deck coloring. I envision my grumpy neighbor with binoculars saying, "That crazy woman is over there coloring."

I have 3 of them. When I was stuck in our recliner due to surgery the coloring books were great. I sat and colored. That's all I could do except play on the computer. It is very relaxing!
I think these sound like something I would be interested in. Have you been using crayons, colored pencils or what is the coloring method of choice? I also have markers but am afraid they might bleed.
While I've been coloring images for many years for cards, I had no idea "adult coloring" was such a thing! It is so much fun. I'm in a Facebook group and what people share is amazing. Anything goes--crayons, markers, gel pens, Prismas, etc. And Tammy, many books are printed one-sided.
I welcome this trend, coloring can be so therapeuthic and I wish a lot more people would include creative outlets into their daily lives.
Sounds like this could be also great for the suffering book and magazine market. They just need to come out with a coloring book with budgies or US muscle cars so I can get my better half into this :mrgreen:.
How quickly things change. I was in a B&N about...6 months ago looking for a coloring book-I had to explain where to find it to the staff after they told me they didnt have it. Now it's the hottie. I ended up not getting it.

Thats pretty much my plan, gingerd. I have to have surgery for bowel cancer in the next few weeks, which would not be so bad, but they believe it's stuck itself to my tailbone, which means having some of that removed too. So I'm expecting there to be a lot of lying down for comfort coming up! Good job we recently bought some recliners, lol.
Aww, I'm sorry about your surgery! A couple of tips.....I put a rolling cart next to me. It's one I had used in my classroom ages ago. Get your coloring things together before you have surgery. I had my books, pencils and pencil sharpener on the cart. I also had my meds, and whatever else I needed on it. It helped a lot. On the other side of me I had a tv tray. I used this for my laptop. With both of these available to me I didn't need constant assistance.
My dh would get me things before he went to work and it would sit on the cart. He would do that again at night before he went up to bed.
When I was a little girl and was "unruly" my parents made me sit quietly and either color, or use plain paper and markers and create something. I would end up doing colorful word art. I created word art all the way through high school.
I look back and now realize I never lacked coloring books, paper, markers, crayons and colored pencils. How sweet of my parents to provide them for me!
I recently started creating word art again with sketch books and sharpie markers. I'd forgotten how relaxing and fun it was to create something so colorful!
Thanks Jen, those sound like great ideas. I already have them packed in my bag to take into hospital, along with a bag of pens. Seems like it'll be a good time to practice my colouring! Hubby works nights, so he'll be at work while I'm sleeping, then he'll get me anything I want before he goes to bed in the morning. Hopefully, it will only be a short while before I'm more comfortable with moving around.
I have loved coloring books since I was a small child and I am well into my 40s now. I have been buying coloring books for years from Dover; they have something for everyone.
Best of luck with surgery Shazsilverwolf, I hope it is successful and they get it all, I'll be thinking of you.
I found out that Stampland of Chicago has started selling some of their images as coloring books. They had two different ones at the Heirloom convention yesterday. The images are full page and much larger than the stamped images.
The reason I like stamping so much is because I love to color. I often take stamped images and my watercolor pencils to staff meeting. Some folks doodle, I color. I haven't had an adult coloring book until recently. Now I have several! It's a great after work activity. I'm a speech-language pathologist with the school system. Any time therapy involves coloring, I color too. I've always felt weird coloring other places (such as the doctors office, etc) but now that this has been in the news so much lately, I guess I can come out of the closet!
Love to color. There are tons available online as well ... check out Pinterest. I print them out and color them. If I really like the design, I'll print on cardstock and use them as backgrounds for cards. I have a drawer full on regular printer paper to keep my hands busy!!!!!
When I first started stamping, I went to a local art supply store that had stamping supplies and my daughter discovered these beautiful coloring books. She was elementary school age and loved to color so I bought her a few. She was hooked and forever ruined for the cheapo coloring books. But she loved them and carefully colored every page, even when she got older. She could make beautiful cards when she needed one for someone special but she didn't really like to stamp and make cards. When I asked her about it once, she said that making a card was work but coloring for fun was relaxing.
