I have been receiving PMs about the definition of CAS for the CAS challenges. How does this sound???
What is CAS?
CAS is an acronym for Clean and Simple.
There has been some discussion in the last week on threads in the general stamping forum about the definition of clean and simple. Here is what I have learned from it there are different ways people view CAS.
1. simple in design regardless of how long it takes to color, stitch or use of a special technique
2. can be copied and mass produced fairly quickly usually without a lot of coloring, layers, and embellishments
3. uses only the traditional tools instead of all the newest and/or expensive fads, for example: Nesties, Cuttlebug, Copics, designer paper
4. any combination of the above

I think a definition is really, really hard! I think you've got a really good start Jen.

This is the bit I'm least sure of. For example, if someone uses a Nestie to emboss directly onto a white card front and stamps an image in the centre of that embossed frame, they might create a beautiful example of something I'd consider clean and simple. Copics are fab for creating simple, solid blocks of colour with no streaks so they'd be a great choice for some CAS designs (although you might use only one marker rather than a whole bunch for shading). Would it be better to focus on the fact that a limited number of tools and techniques are used in making the card? If you look at the "recipe" for most CAS cards, it's considerably shorter than many of the projects in the gallery.
Just thinking out loud here, hoping it might help something evolve!

I agree with this regarding some of the newer tools. I like the idea that its the number of tools rather than whether or not they are old or new.
wonderful cards. I love this thread. can someone please tell me where the CAS challenges are? I looked, but could not find.
And, with regard to the definition of CAS, as a supreme court justice once said about hardcore pornography, "I can't define it, but I know it when I see it...." (he later recanted that view....)
enough already!

Thank you so much LaLatty for mentioning my card this could have been a cas but being I didnt have a punch for the frame part I thought it was a bit more time consuming than a cas would be...I just love having white showing up alot on my cards now...Thanks again!!
Thank you, Rebecca (rj77), for mentioning my card!! I had to call my DH at work to tell him I made the favorites thread!!! What a great way to start off a stamping Sunday! Thanks so much!

There are people who have that "personal" definition. Maybe I should have put OR in the variety of definitions. ;) I never meant them to be a list of rules.

Um... as the CAS challenge hostess, I needed responses before I posted the next challenge. This is not supposed to be a negative thing. ;)

You are welcome! It's a great card. I'm so glad it gave you something to smile about. Someone has mentioned mine, also, and honestly it just made me smile all the way down deep inside! This is such a great community. Always something fun to see and learn from someone, as well as getting some great positive feedback. Thanks ladies (and the occasional gent, I'm sure)!

I love looking at all the CAS mentions each week, especially this week as I have not been feeling well. I've spent so little time in the Galleries but I did come across these two that I just had to mention.
Thanks for the mention Jen - and I'm so loving these weekly CAS challenges as they really make me work outside of my comfort zone! Thanks for all you are doing for these!!
Thanks, Krystie, for starting the thread! I had so little time in the gallery last week after coming home from vacation and then going off to my grandmother's funeral, and I'm enjoying checking out everyone's great CAS finds! There are so many beautiful cards here!
