Default Chalks

I have a question regarding using chalks, I made some baby cards (know a lot of people that are pregnant) and instead of coloring all of the babies individually I used my chalks, but now they seem to have rubbed off. How do you get the color to stick?

Also can you let me know about using the versamarker or blender pens? Do those make the colors more permanent?

Thanks for your help!!

You can spray your card after "chalking" w/ a fixative...I use Krylon Workable Fixative, but there are many options out there, including hairspray (the cheaper stuff seems to work better).

I do find that the chalk doesn't seem to rub off as much when I use it w/ a blender pen, but I would still seal it "just in case". The blender pen can harden your chalks, so it's a good idea to grab the color from the edge of the chalk cake and leave the center part for dry use. I haven't used chalks w/ the versamarker, so I'd be interested to hear more about that technique.

Another thing that helps make them stick is to take a clean sheet of copier paper and lay it over your chalked image and rub with the heel of your hand.

This helps rub the chalk deeper into the cardstock; the copier paper keeps it from smearing when you rub your hand over it and it also will pick up some of the loose dust.

I've heard of and tried the Blender Pen technique, but not the Versamarker technique. The Blender Pen enables you to achieve somewhat of a more watercolor effect. I don't personally care for the results, preferring watercolor pencils or crayons? But, others very much like the effect.

If you use the Blender Pen technique, I recommend that you apply the tip of the pen to a select corner, not the center or all over the surface, of the chalk cake; the blender fluid will harden and seal the cake, rendering it useless for the soft effect we normally use them for.

If you don't have fixative I have used Hair spray in the past! Just don't hold the can too close to your project.

I have used the versamrak pen lots of times with my chalk pastels and it works very well for me. What I have done is stamp the image in whatever ink you want to and then go in and :color: the area you want to chalk with the versamark. Then use a sponge or q-tip or the applicators in the chalks to color in the part you versamarked. I found the sponges work really well. You can even blend pretty well by using more than one color. It sticks to the versamark and I love it. It does darken the color of the pastels a little bit, so see what color you get on some scratch paper first. Have fun and good luck!
