Default card sizes

is there a "standard" size for cards? I notice that most are 4 1/4 by 5 1/2. is that just because it's easy to cut from paper?

I'm doing my first swap and I'm not sure that's big enough for my idea. So I was just wondering if there is a "standard" or can you do any size you want?

thanks for your help. I'm new at this and a little lost.

4 1/4 by 5 1/2 is the standard size because when you cut a sheet of card stock in half and fold each of those in half you have 2 cards. They fit prefectly into an invitation envelope.

Of course, you can do any size you want, but will have to make your own envelopes if it is not a common size.

Default Does the post office have a problem with off sizes?

I am just curious if the post office will send any size card or if they have problems with weird sizes. I like square cards myself, instead of rectangle but I don't know if you can mail them. Just a thought. Good luck with the swap.

I think there is a minimum size restriction. The 6x6 costs extra in postage, I believe.

A standard card is 4-1/4 x 5-1/2 .. you get two per sheet of cardstock and they fit in an invitation size envelope.

Postage is .37 for a standard card... and any rectangle size card up to 6x9 ... so long as the weight isn't too much.

Square cards will cost you more... the Post Office machines cannot recognize which side is up... and cannot locate your stamp for cancelling... so they have to be cancelled by hand.

For swaps, it is easier for your hostess if all cards are standard size. Some participants don't send a large enough return envelope to accomodate larger/odd-shaped cards.

Hope this helps.
