This has been bugging me a little for a little while now. And sense I'm now in a bummer mood cause of my man retiring. :(
Can I ask why the card makers are so great on this site with their help and advice but the scrapbookers aren't? Are the scrapbookers a closer knitted group and stick with their own? Or am I just full of sour grapes? (it's ok be honest, I can take it *puts on football helmet*)
Hmm, I'm a card maker so I don't have any insight. Could it be because there are more card makers on the site so percentage wise the number of helpful people in each group is the same even though in sheer numbers it seems like there are more helpful card makers here? I can't imagine that scrapbookers on the whole are any different than card makers in terms of their willingness to help others- LOL!
I am more a scrapbooker, but also love to make cards. I try to help with scrapbook q's when I feel i have something to offer, but to be honest, I don't check the scrapbook forums much, since i come here more for the card examples, info, etc.

This has nothing to do with your question but I will miss watching Brett too.
What kind of advice are you looking for that you aren't getting? I am a scrapbooker first and then a card maker....but I don't think I've really hung out on the SB threads here...
I'm a scrapbooker an just ot into the whole card making thing about 2 years ago. I don't check thos forums much either...I should...seeing as I scrapbook pages and sell them on ebay
what would you like to know...? or send me the link to thread and I'll see if I can help...
hum....I do both cards and scrapbooks. I always check the gallery, and general stamp talk forum and the tools forum. I guess I'll try to start checking the scrapbookers forum more. I think to be honest, I just run out of time...and never get there. Also the general info and tool info...I apply to scrapbooking. Even the cards in the gallery - I take ideas and techniques and apply them to scrapbooking.
I haven't started posting anything yet...don't have a camera. But I did buy a printer Sunday that scans...so after I get it hooked up and figure out how to work it, maybe I can start my own gallery!
feel free to send me messages directly if you need help. I'll try to start frequenting the scrapbook forums.
Just basic help, I'm trying to venture more into scrapbooking and frankly it's a little overwhelming.
Mat or not mat photos?
Are kits better to use or buy supplies separatly?
Choronological order or not?
I also asked in the monthly kit thread if they suggested a new scrapbooker would benefit from those.... nothing.
I've posted pics and asked for help or comments... nothing.
Which I was quite schocked about, everyone on the card making/paper crafting forums are sooooo helpful.
I, too am a card maker AND a scrapbooker. I guess I just forget that the scrapbook forums are there. I use the ideas for cards all the time, but I think I usually have a different style of sb than alot of people. I put LOTS of photos on pages and I have found many people just put one or two. I make my albums for a way to pass photos down to my "kids" and want to include all the photos I can (in lieu of a shoe box full of unidentified photos like I inherited!) Make any sense? I have 2 albums in my gallery, but not too many people look at them, and less comment on them. (I guess even if people don't like my style, I do, so that is the way I am going to do my scrapbooks! )
If I can, I would be glad to help out anyone, but I will try to go to the sb forums more often!

I have a question!!! I'm just getting into scrapbooking and most of my pictures are pre-digital camera era. Do I put those right onto the page or scan and use tth scanned picture? Seems kind of a dumb question but I'm concerned about the acid/lignin free thing.......

I put pictures right into the scrapbook, unless I need duplicates for a duplicate scrap book, or it is a real heritage kind of photo, where you can't put it into the book (I have some in these metal kind of cases... very early photography.

Honey,
I will never do digital scrapbooks - just my thing.
Use you pictures as they are!

I'm a scrapbooker first, and a cardmaker second, but I find lots of useful info on the cardmaking forums that I can relate to scrapbooking.
When I come online (which is sporadic), I always use the "new posts" button to search. Don't often see scrapbooking topics come up, so I'm guessing it's just that there is far more traffic in the other areas of the site.
As far as your questions go:
- I have never scrapped from a kit, so I can't help you there!
- I sometimes mat photos and sometimes not, depending on the mood I'm in and the LO I'm following (ALL my LO's are copied from somewhere; I haven't got an original idea in my body....LOL)
- When I first started scrapping, I scrapped in chronological order, but I've now switched to doing whatever LO I feel like in no order whatsoever. In my case, it's usually because I've seen a LO I like somewhere and know I have photos that will be perfect for it. When I finish a LO, I keep it in a 3 ring SB and then when I have 10 or so layouts that fit a theme I switch them to the SB that they will stay in.
I have SB LO's and cards both on my blog if you feel like checking it out

The General scrapping board is fast moving and lots of help for newbies...tips,advice etc.
The members gallery there is great also for checking out LOs....
You can scan them or you can take them to you photo developer and have them make duplicates. They will even retouch photos for you. A great way to use old photos pre-digi is to get them scanned and developed in Black and white...that way you can chose any color scheme you like and theme your page easier.
If you go to printers like Business Depot or Staples they will do color copies as well for very cheap...usually you can get more than 1 shot on a page. A lot of my old photos are color copies

I am a scrapbooker first, but I come here more for the stamping and card making aspect. I have other scrapbooking forums I go to.
To answer your questions though:
If you mat a photo it will highlight it. If you stick it down without a mat, there is the chance of the photo getting lost on your page. If you are starting, I might recommend matting the photo until you find a style you like.
Scrapbook kits are great if you are starting out. All the papers and embellishments match so you don't have to worry about that. There are kits you can buy in the LSS and there are hundreds of Scrapbook kits that you can get sent monthly to your door.
I scrap my pictures out of order, but i still try to put them into some sort of order into my books. That's why I always have a pile of LO's hanging around, not in books.
Monthly kits would benefit a new scrapper. You just have to find the kit that appeals to you. You want a scrapbooking kit, not a card making kit.
I find when I do stop at the scrapbooking forums, not much has been posted, so I don't bother much with it. It might be beneficial to find a scrapbooking forum. If 1 Peas is too over whelming, try www.scrapbook.com
As well, check out my blog. I may have a few videos that will inspire you.
Thanks so much Curias! Great advice, I am going to try matting more photos next time. Some of my fish photos didn't pop off the page like I wanted them to.
I guess it may also be because there are more stamping cardmakers than scrapbookers and SCS is a stamper's site, so the 'main' scrapping crowd is probably hanging around places like 2Peas and Scrap-In-Style ( Just don't expect any honest critizism there. All the comments you get at those sites is 'great','wonderful' and 'awesome'...)
But I am both, so I will promise to try and be helpfull whenever possible!

I started scrapbooking first and recently got into cards. i did not know that this site had a forum dedicated for scrapbooking, but I use some ideas from cards and incorported in my scrapbooking.
I depend on 2 books for scrapping - Becky Higgins Sketches and Cathy Zielske's Clean and Simple Scrapbooking books (she has 2). Becky's current book is GREAT and it breaks it down to layouts by number of photos you want to use- using wallet sized prints to really get them loaded on the page!
There is no shame in copying layouts with the stuff you have on hand- why reinvent the wheel?! Here is the link to her book: http://store.scrapbook.com/ck-31007.html
Cathy Zielske uses less photos in her layouts, but has a nice, clean style that keeps the focus on the story, not the embellishments. She also is a proponent of NOT scrapping chronologically- which can be VERY OVERWHELMING and frustrating, since you never catch up. She suggests scrapping things as you are going along or as the mood strike. Have several albums going at once so you can work on what you feel like at your own pace. http://store.scrapbook.com/ck-615860139.html

I scrapbook first and just started making some cards.
Generally what I usually do is start with a designed background dots, flowers, stripes whatever, Then I try to find a solid shade of paper that will most likely stand out against the designed background. I usually use this paper for mounting my photos on I try not to cut my photos all up really small like because then it seems like you have tons of paper and these itty bitty photos.
Also I try to arrange the photos in a triangle it seems more appeasing to the eye. (I read that somewhere)
Use stickers and embellishments to enhance your page not over do your page. The goal is to bring the photos to life... not cover them up with stickers.
HTH.
Also I had no idea there were forums on here for scrapbookers. Im gonna check it out

Breezy, you know I don't come out of CE much, but I'll give it a go for you! I think that card makers outnumber scrappers pretty significantly so that's probably part of it.
Matting: I've been taught that if you are going to place your picture on patterened paper, you should mat. If not, it's just aesthetically what you prefer. But putting a photo right on patterened paper muddies it up.
Kits: I like kits for coordination purposes but I can also find coordination in designer lines. Kits are great for brag books to cohesiveness.
Chronological: I've seen tons of articles that say do some chrono books and some theme books. Mix it up in other words. Some book themes work best in chrono order. Like books for your kids growing up. But some scrappers have holiday books, vacay books, etc that can be chrono or not.
Monthly Kits: I tried them but didn't like them. I didn't like being boxed into a layout and didn't find the supplies to be of an acceptable quality for my taste.

I started out as a stamper but got away from it about 8 years ago and turned into a scrapbooker. I'm pretty comfortable in scrapping so I'm sorry that I don't check on the scrapping section more often. However, I'm back into stamping and pretty much have to learn stuff from scratch! So much has changed from back when I started. I noticed I have some SU sets from 1998! Yikes!
I will try to check the scrapping forums more often. We all love support, praise, helping and getting help - I think papercrafters in general are such a loving & supportive group!
They do tend to be a pretty tight knit group in the scrapbooking forum but I have always found everyone helpful. I love to do the challenges (I was MIA for about a year but have just made it back to the boards) and find lots of inspiration from them. Did you participate in the VSBN this past weekend? If not, there is still time! Pages need to be uploaded by Friday.
BTW, I never, ever crop with my original pictures - at least not without scanning them first.
Mat or not mat photos? - This really depends in the look you are trying to achieve. In the past matting photos was the ONLY "acceptable" thing to do, but recently it's not so important. Sometimes I'll only mat 1 photo on a LO, in order to emphasize it. Finding Nemo - The Musical by laurakj at Splitcoaststampers
Are kits better to use or buy supplies separatly? Again, personal preference. I do not usually like kits. I think part off the fun of scrapbooking is the picking out what goes on each page, and kits do that for you. I also don't usually like everything in a kit and I'm a cheapskate so I don't like paying for things I won't use. ;)
Choronological order or not? Umm Do you mean for the albums or the order to scrap the pages? I like my albums in order, but I do not and CANNOT scrap that way. I tried it for a while and I got so burnt out on scrapping a certain time period that I couldn't be creative. So now I scrap what I feel like when I feel like it.
I also asked in the monthly kit thread if they suggested a new scrapbooker would benefit from those.... nothing. Sometimes yes, sometimes no, I really think it depends on the kit.

I just went to your gallery and looked at your two albums and some of your other projects. I like your style!! The wedding album was gorgeous!
