Yes, ladies, I'm still taking cards! Christmas cards are cutting it close now (I'll be taking them to the Edmonton Garrison by mid October) so if you have those, send them ASAP.
Any other occasion, I'll gladly take any time. PM me when you're ready to send and I'll give you my address.
It's great to see new people showing interest - I hate hitting up the same ones who have been so generous all along. :p
Great. I'll get some started and pm you when I've got a bunch to send off. Cheers,
Hayley
Sounds great, Hayley! Thank you. Have you read back on the thread about sending the cards express post rather than parcel post? If you need more info, let me know, and I'll PM it to you.
Hi all,
I have gotten a few requests from people who want to send cards to Canadian troops. I noticed the Manitoba one is no longer acceptiong cards. Is there a group that will accept cards that is NOT regional or for one base? I am looking for a national card program that will send to the military in general rather than those from a certain province, if that makes sense.

I don't know of any, and believe me, when I was searching back in 2006 it was hard enough finding the one out of Manitoba. I had assumed that when I took the cards to the Edmonton Garrison, they were available for any of the military serving in Afghanistan. Maybe I'll have to fire off an e-mail to my contact and see if we can get this figured out. I take them to Edmonton because they are the closest base to me and the price of mailing the 5+ boxes through CP to somewhere else would be insane.
Maybe you'll just have to start your own campaign! ;) The cards will still have to be taken to a particular base to get taken overseas, so I'm not sure how a "general" program would work.
Dang - I've missed the cut-off for Christmas cards. WUWT?
Sorry......
What does WUWT mean?
Do you have Christmas cards made or were you still hoping to get to it? If you get them in the mail in the next week they should get here in time, especially for you, Robin, because you're not that far away from me.
I sent cards out to you today. Just a couple dozen but I will see if I can collect a few more and send them your way. Thanks so much for doing this for our troops. They need all the support and love that we can send them and their way.

I will PM you my address.
Sorry everyone for short messages - I've been home sick for 2 days and don't have a whole lot of energy.
Finally feel like I'm coming back to the land of the healthy, except for a cough that keeps me up all night! I've been told it lasts 2-3 weeks (coming from people that are a week or two ahead of me in symptoms) which is not all that encouraging! :p
14everridge's cards arrived last week and I also put in some cards that I had been "stashing" (they were occasions that will happen in early 2009). So on that note, I have a new card total.
We're sitting at 7,087! Don't know if you realize this, but since I started this thread back in Feb/March 2007 we've collected over 10,000 cards. That is so amazing to me. Thanks to all of you.
I had 3 packages of cards arrive this past week. Unfortunately I'm having internet/computer issues at home and I forgot to bring the card total to work with me.
Can you believe it?!?! (for some of you the answer will be "YES") :p I forgot to bring the card total to work (again) and my computer at home is not connecting to the internet at all. It's driving us all crazy!!! I also received another batch of cards from my SU lady so there will be an even bigger total.
On another note, my husband drives truck for a living to Fort MacMurray (about 5.5 hours north of Edmonton) along with another guy who also drives up there - they each own their own truck. The other driver collapsed at the dock and had to be rushed to the hospital by ambulance. At this point we don't know if he had a heart attack or got a severe case of the flu, but it's put everybody in a tailspin up there. The keys for the truck are locked inside, they have to figure out how to get the truck and trailer back to Edmonton again...a whole jumble of things to figure out.
My prayers are with your husband's coworker. Hopefully he will have a speedy recovery.
I have also pm'd you for some information.
Marjorie
Thanks for your prayers. He is out of the hospital and should be home (he was 5 hours away from home when it happened). We're away right now (a little winter getaway - YEAH!) so I'm just checking in while we're gone.
Of course, once again, I don't have the card total. But, one update: I took 3 boxes of cards into the Edmonton Garrison yesterday. They were very thankful for them. So I am now passing the thank you onto all of you.
It took me a long time get here and do an update. Sorry about that. My dad was admitted to the hospital on Thursday and we've been busy with visits to him. This won't be a short stay so I will be here sporadically. If you send a PM wanting an address, please be patient.
Anyway, the new card total is 7,371! I took a batch of cards into the Edmonton Garrison on November 7. Again, they were very appreciative.
Now for the cool news. I got an e-mail from someone about the cards. Here is an excerpt: "I wanted to pass some information on to you. The teacher that did the pay-it-forward last year received an iris folded card back from Afghanistan from a young woman soldier that was born here in Woodstock and was raised in Eastwood (5 miles from here) She picked a card to send a friend and one to send the teacher and class. Her letter explained what they were doing to help the people there. The teacher was so excited to receive this and the two girls who's cards were chosen each read part of the letter at the armistice day ceremony at school on the 11th. Thank you so much for putting the note on the back of the card as this is what prompted the young soldier to pick them.
I thought you would be interested in knowing how the card came back home."
When "speciality" groups send cards (i.e. classes, retirement homes, etc.) I put a sticky label on the back stating the group who made the cards. Just so you know, NEVER do I put personal addresses or phone numbers - they were school addresses and the retirement home address. That's pretty exciting, though.
Anyway, hope everyone's having a good evening. Until the next update....
I'm sorry to hear about your dad. Sending you some (((SQUISHY HUGS)))
Thank you. He goes in for a 3 hour consultation tomorrow and begins Photodynamic Therapy next week, as long as all goes according to what the doctors proprose. He will receive nourishment through i.v. because the treatment will be too painful for him to eat (the cancer is on his esophagus) for several days.
Just found this thread, I think we hooked up on stampin Canada, anyways great to hear you got my cards ages ago, even with an incomplete address. Could you please pm me your address again.

Wow - we must all be very busy - nothing's been put on here in a week (and that means me too!).
I'm wondering if a lady named Susan from Calgary is attached to SCS? I received a package of cards but I can't find where I connected with her! ERRR - my fault for not keeping track. If you're on here (or know who she is) please let me know.
Will do a new card total soon.
I'm just wondering...are people still interested in contributing, or do I need to wind this project down? I know people are VERY busy over the Christmas season, but if you think you'll be able to send cards in the new year, please let me know. I think our troops pull out of Afghanistan in 2011, correct?
I would love to help out! Hope I'm not too late...I just saw your thread today! Please send me your address so I can mail you some cards for the troops over seas!
Thank you.
Beth

Have been putting things together to make cards over the few days I have off at Christmas. Hope to make valentines, mothers day, fathers day, thinking of you and a few others. Just started to reorganize my craft stash and as I find things that give me ideas for cards for this thread I throw it in a box and I have to say that box is getting full. I can't wait to get going on these.
My hubby is one of the actors that participates in the training exercises in Wainwright and over the last 3 years has become friends with many of the afghan people that take part as well. Right now the plan is for Canada to pull out in 2011 but that could change as we were originally supposed to pull out in 2009. If Canada pulls out to early everything we have done over there to help the country rebuild will go down the tubes. Most of the fighting over there is taking place in one area of the country. The majority of other parts are peaceful and actually look a lot like Alberta landscape wise with mountains.
Unfortunately with the way the media works the general public does not get the full story of what is happening over there and what Canada's role really is. We only see what they choose to show us which is normally just the bad stuff. I know I never really understood what Canada was doing over there until DH starting working with DND on these training exercises.
I saw a truck a few months ago with a saying on the window that I thought was awesome. I am sure a lot of people took offense to it due to lack of information being provided to the general public but it said "If you are not going to stand behind our soldiers please stand in front of them".
Okay I am going to get off this crazy soap box I am standing on and get it filled with cards.
Thank you so much for the information you provided! I'm sure most (if not all) of us are aware that the media has their particular slant on what they want us to know. It happens in all current events.
Can I make one request regarding the Valentines cards? Can you make them "love" so that if they don't get to the soldiers in time for Valentines to be sent back to their loved ones they can still be usable for anniversary, love you, etc.
I TOTALLY love the window saying. I believe that Canada would not be the safe place that it is if it weren't for the military working as hard as they do. The loss of life is so sad, and I can't imagine living through that as a military family. The best way I know to show support is to collect these cards for them. Does that sound really sappy? I truly feel that way, though.
Thanks for your soap box! It brings us back to the real reason for doing this project.
