I started linking people and then got scared that I wasn't following a protocol so I stopped

Good question! I'd like to know too. I do have a list on my blog. I never asked permission, because I never really thought about it. So, I'd like to know the answer too.
(I think there was discussion about this before but I didn't pay attention cause I didn't have a blog at that point.)

I've read other discussions on this, and the responses were mixed. Personally, I never link a "family" type blog without permission. With stamping related blogs I will add the link and then just send a quick note to the person saying something like "I love your work. I hope you don't mind that I've added a link to your blog on my own". No one has ever said no... though I really haven't done it a ton of times either (I am not a big linker! ;))
I always ask. Unless I've read in another thread where the blogger says "Feel free to link to me". I don't want to link and then have to hear "Uh, don't like your blog, get mine off of there", which I assume doesn't happen much, if at all, in the stamping world.
I've linked a few from SCS where they gave blanket permission for people to link to them. Otherwise I always contact the person and tell them I like their blog and ask them if it's ok to link to it - and then I also send a link to my blog so they can check mine out to make sure it's the "caliber" that they want their link associated with. ;-)
That's just what I've done. I'm happy to have people link to mine and am always happily surprised when I find a link on someone elses blog to mine. But it'd be nice to know when people do it.

Most of the time I ask permission because some bloggers get upset if you don't. Not sure why that is. As for me I do not care if someone wants to add my blog to their blog. I wonder if there is some thing written about blog etiquette. If there is I would love to know where so that I can read it. I hate doing the wrong thing.
I agree ......... I normally ask permission first before I add a link to someone blog ..... the exception to this is if I find someone has already added me to their blogroll without me knowing then I add them to my site and let them know I have done so.
It is a good idea to info the people you are linking as in most cases they will reciprocate!
I added links as "blogs I love" and I would hope that those people would be ok with that. I've had a couple of people thank me for linking them, no one has asked me to remove them!
If they already have me linked on their blog then I don't bother asking I just add it. otherwise I normally ask or send a note like "Love your blog and linked it! Hope you don't mind."

You know, the more I think about this, the more I'm thinking that perhaps the bloggers that would get upset about something so minor aren't the kind of bloggers I'd like to link to anyhow! ;)
I used to email each person and ask permission...after some conversations here, I realized that I was in the minority...most people LOVE to be linked. So now I link 'em...but I like to send an email telling them...(many people get warm fuzzies knowing they are linked and I like to send as many warm fuzzies out as possible!)
As for me...link away!

My opinion is that if they have their blog in their signature line for anyone to view/read, then linking shouldn't be a problem. I don't mind, link away!

I add links to Blogs and Other Sites of Interest in two ways: blogs I tag; blogs I mention in Super Site posts. In each case, I e-mail the blogger and tell her (or him) I've linked to them on my blog, and ask them to let me know if they don't want the link included on my blog. So far, no one has asked me to remove the link.
Haven't any idea if that's the way it's 'supposed' to be done...
I don't feel it's necessary to ask. Maybe tell them that you linked them, and if they have a problem with it you can remove it, but I really can't see why someone would mind.
