Yes, both my very good friend and I are what we jokingly like to call "Executive Hobby Demos". Neither of us are interested in doing workshops (although my friend is such an extravert and would do one if asked)--we are both retired from our primary careers, work part-time in areas we enjoy, and just love being hobby demos together.
Oh there are a LOT of us Demos in it for the Discount! You get the discount, plus all the perks ... like seeing the mini catalogs EARLY and getting to order stuff EARLY! There is a ton of great info on the SU! Demo Website and you can order what you want, when you want it! Sweet!!!!!

I just browsed through your gallery and your cards are fabulous. I love that little tote and matching card. Got some good ideas, too.

Me, too! I've been a "discount demo" for almost 3yrs now. I have two friends who buy about $100 a year combined. The rest is all ME!! Although, I have had some interest in a workshop brewing lately. We'll see if I can make the leap. I love my SU!!! Especially at a discount.

I think I've just persuaded DH to "buy" me the starter kit for christmas.
1. I don't have an SU contact and don't just want to pick one locally - they none of them have websites- and
2. Is there any pressure as long as you make the $300 quarterly sales.

Do I sign up?!
Thanks in advance
If you make your minimums, there should be no pressure on you to do anything more than you wish to do. If there is, you should look for a new upline. My upline is in another state and I have never even met her. She came highly recommended by my friend who talked me into signing up. She still includes me in all her emails to her other downlines, many of whom have very active SU businesses, but is OK with having a few hobby demos also. Since SU specifically states that THEY are OK with and even recruits hobby demos, I feel good about it.
The only pressure I feel is self-imposed trying to resist buying too much, or buying all the other goodies that are discussed on SCS. Now that's pressure!!!

As long as you pick the right upline (INTERVIEW and let them know you're just looking to be a "discount demo") there will be no pressure. There is non from SU directly-- meet your mins, and you're A-OK with the company!

You actually do need to find someone to sign-up under. If you don't have a local SU demo or don't want to pick one randomly from the demo locater on the SU website, do you know anyone from here that's an SU demo that you could sign-up under? They'll have all the forms you'll need to fill out and they'll benefit from you being her/his recruit.
There is absolutely no pressure to do anything more than you want to! If you make the quarterly minimums, then you get to keep your discount. : ) If not, you just stop being a demo - no questions asked/no big deal.
There's actually a special on the starter kit right now where you get $30 off the regular price that runs through November 30th (SU would have to receive your paperwork by then).
EnglishRose. could you enter an address farther away in your town? Maybe yu will get some other demos with a web site.. I would call one (or a few) to see what kind of vibe you get from them. Maybe meet with one or two.. Most important is to be honest wit them. Tell them you want to be a hobby demo for now and ask how they feel about it. I got my upline from the locator and I love her.. no pressure!
Good luck!
Maybe you could call a couple names you get from the Demo Locator and ask if they have any workshops or classes coming up. That way, you can meet them to see if you would feel comfortable working with them and maybe meet some stampers that live near you.
My current upline encouraged me to be a demo because I was spending so much each quarter. I've been a hobby demo for about 18 months. My mom and I are my only customers.

I have been a demo for over 3 years. I spent a year buying for myself, then a year doing 2 stamp clubs and then dropped back again to a discount demo, and I love it! The hardest part is to keep within my minimums, but I have that under control with timing my orders. I will do a workshop if asked, and I have had two unsolicited outside orders this year. I just enjoy stamping and don't like the pressure of having to do a second business after I am finished with my full time job.
Actually if none of them have websites they are probably hobby demos themselves. That might be the best person for you to sign under. They definitely won't be pushy.
At first I thought I would just be a hobby demo (with me as my only customer) but then I did a few workshops and went to a few meetings for a demo group led by my up-up-upline and I became just as addicted to the business side of things as I am to stamping.
Having the right upline (and Up-upline and Up-up-upline) was the key for me. The ladies in my upline and sideline don't pressure, but they're great motivators. And, of course, the SU demo forum on SCS is a constant source of ideas and inspiration!
I would echo everyone here who suggested that you interview your potential uplines, ask them about what they do to support their downline and how they feel about having hobby demos in their downline. Also, ask them about local meetings with other demonstrators that you might be able to attend as a member of their downline. Even if you're not a business demo, demo meetings are a great place to get stamping ideas for yourself.
You don't need to "click" with your upline to be a hobby demo, but it sure helps! Doing just a little advance research can result in a much better demo experience for you.
It's totally worth it for the discount. When I was thinking about signing up, I would think back on how much I was spending on stamping. It was way more that $300 every 3 months, so I took the plunge. With the exception of an occasional order here and there from family, I'm in it for just the fun of it!!

Yep, at me to the list. After buying way beyond the mins for lots of years, then moving to another state, I decided to be my own best customer. I have a few friends that order once in awhile, but otherwise it is all me. I love the discount, love being able to preorder stuff, and see things first. SU stills treats you like any other demo.
Thisv is such a sad thread for me. I have virtually no customers and get an occasional order, but after 3 years I don't NEED $300 worth of stuff each quarter adn some quarters I sweat it out begging for orders so I won't go pending. This quarter I easily had enough but have nothing lined up for next quarter. sigh.

Ditto. I am not only my best customer, but my only customer. Thank goodness I love the winter mini because I am definitley burning through my wish list. When craft fair season ends, it will be tough to stay a demo. But then there is always a new catty in July if I can hold on that long. Darn!
