Barbara has a clarification for the current Ask Beate question:

Those who successfully used sugar-free Kool-Aid in the past may have been using a product that is no longer available. I believe that was artificially sweetened with aspartame and they no longer sell that product. It was "sugar free" but not "unsweetened". Now there is only sugar-sweetened and unsweetened, which has no sweetener of any kind in it. I'm not sure if the unsweetened will work at all, but sugar sweetened won't work they say because it burns. Perhaps what will work is buying some aspartame (NutraSweet or Equal) to mix with the unsweetened mix.
Be sure to read the label. Many drink mixes that were once sweetened with aspartame are now sweetened with Splenda, which is sucralose. Their chemical properties are vastly different.
