Can anyone tell me the best type of adhesive to use for covering compsition books? I don't own a Xyron(yet!). Do you use Mod Podge or something similar to protect the paper or just leave as is? Also, do you cover the inside of the front and back covers too and if so, with designer paper or plain card stock??? Thanks for all your help!
I use the red sticky tape (super sticky, double-sided) (sorry, can't remember the formal name for this tape). I put the tape down on the edges of the book, then apply the background paper onto the tape. With a coordinating piece of paper, I cover the spine so that about 1/2"-3/4" of it is on both sides of the book, overlapping the background paper. I do not decorate the inside flaps.

You can also use an old credit card or piece of plastic to skim on a nice even dose of Elmers or Modge podge and do it that way. It's cheaper and since you have the modge podge already. Be sure to smooth out any air bubbles.

oops...and to answer your other questions ...I do cover the inside flaps with deisgner paper. I don't use card stock when covering comp books....just because it makes it too *thick* and then it doesn't seem to close properly.
I've used the terrific tacky tape, but very expensive. Thought about trying the mono multi ( green bottle) what do you all think about that? Does great on cards. Also when you cover the front do you bend the front paper over the sides and then apply inside cover paper, or just trim at the edges? Thanks Darc

It's a good idea! But It might get expensive to use the Mono Multi glue (green and white bottle)
Try buying a small bottle of the Mod podge. It run's around $4.00. And you can pick it up pretty much at any craft store and Wal-mart.
With Mod Podge you can spread it on with a Foam paint brush and it will be spread even.
I also like the idea of using Spray adhesive's!
This too would give even coverage.
for those of you who use modge podge....do you cover the actual book cover and then do it again over the paper once you have applied the paper to the comp book or do you just apply it to the comp book and smooth out any bubbles??
I use the modge podge as a glue and leave it unless upon expection I see I got some on the outside. (Happens occasionally). Then I coat the outside as well.

Most the time, I use it only under my paper as an adhesive and not on top. I have done it on the top a few times, but prefer it to be just the paper and not shiney. The bubbles is another reason I don't like to cover the top. If you have small bubbles, you can pop them with a pin. Don't

Don't try to rub it with a brayer...it will pull up your paper and you'll have a huge mess on your hands. I learned that the hard way.

I am wondering about using mono multi too, I have the little tiny books and want to do these for teacher gifts, along with a cute short pen. Love to hear opinions. I was planning on stamping on card stock and putting it just on the front and back cover and leaving the black binding plain? Anyone done little mini composition books? They are like 2 x 3?

For those of you who use Mod Podge with a sponge brush, do you wash the brush out between uses or toss it and use a new one? I know that when I've used the sponge brushes, after a while they get ucky and don't work so well if I keep rinsing and reusing. But I don't want to necessarily toss it after each use...
I waited until Michael's had 50% off coupons and used them to buy the Xyron machines and the refills. It is a little pricey, but I have turned into a Xyron fiend. I am amazed at all the things I use the machines for.
I also alwyasb cover the insides of the composition books, it just gives them a nice finished, quality look.
I usually leave the binding alone (black seems to go with everything), but I have covered with paper and I have painted with acrylic paint as well. It all works. For glue, I've used the wonder tape (red) but its too expensive. I like the spray adhesive (sprayed on the paper) and that really holds. I like using Modge Podge too, BUT, I make a total mess when I use glue and I tend to get this on me, on parts of the book that I don't want to cover, on the table, on my paper covering the table (get it, I'm covered with Modge Podge now) and then everything sticks to me. So I have to be careful with the MP. I do love that mono multi glue and will use that too. I bought some of the smaller ones too and am just going to do them the same as the big ones - either using patterned paper or stamping on card stock and adhering. Sometimes I put paper in the inside of the covers (not cardstock though) but it just depends on what the cover looks like and if I screwed up and got something on it. If its good and white, I sometimes leave it alone. Or glue a pocket kind of thing on the inside. These are so addicting and really are easier than they look. Mary
I have used Rubber Cement by Elmer's when covering my comp. books.......it has worked great.......no problems.....I have even used this if I covered the black binding with paper and it has stayed together very well.
My craft room is right by my guest bathroom so I clean mine after each use. I reuse the heck out of them. When I worked at the scrapbook store, it would drive me crazy when people would throw the foam brushes away...that came out of our budget. I'd rummage through the little trash bags and get them out and soak them in water.

I have a butter tub on my counter with a ziplock baggie in it. Once I use the foam brush I stick it in the baggie and zip it shut until I can wash it off. It will dry out after a few days though, but soap and hot water usually get it clean again. Oh yeah, I use the top of the tub to put my glue on and just let it dry there if I don't need it all. Just peel it off to start again.
