Default $$Subterfuge, Sneaky, or Just Clever? $$

We all know how expen$ive this hobby/art/obsession is, and we just love our husbands. We just wouldn't want them to worry their uninformed little heads - bless their hearts

Me? Well, I have been known to pay cash, have things shipped to work, scrounge grocery money, raid the change jar...

What clever ways have YOU come up with to prevent your spouse from worrying about all the money you are spending on stamping supplies?

I don't have to hide anything from my husband. We both stay within our agreed-upon limits.

I too am fortunate that my DH enjoys collecting pocket knives, tools, and recently took up golf on a more serious level. He never has questioned what I spend on my crafting items. However, for me personally I feel better about it since I do work full time now. But yes, I can remember shopping for groceries at Meijer's a few times because of some scrapbooking items I had been wanting which they happened to carry, lol.

I don't hide anything from my hubby. He knows what I spend and has never begrudged me anything. Of course, I am careful with our money.

When dh does get a "little snippy" about my purchases, I remind him about his coin collections, bass boats, knife showcases. Then he calms down, shrugs his shoulders, gets his two days of turkey sandwiches as his penance, then we are back to square one. I am in the medical field, and I take several nights of call each month, the call back pay can add up, and my sleepless nights gives me something else to whine about.

I don't hide as we don't share expenses - we have household costs that are shared but whatever is left over is our own business. His photography equipment is so much more expensive than stamping so it wouldn't become an issue.

I have my own account so after expenses & savings are covered, leftover $ is for me spend on whatever. He supports my hobby wholeheartedly, but I'm not sure he knows the full scope of the cost. I've pretty much set a limit...stamps under $20, embellies under $5 and the only paper I buy is SU for my cards. (I have enough 12x12 card stock to last a lifetime of scrapbooking!). I think he admires my limits and thinks it all under control. He just doesn't realize how many of the items I get at one time!! Lol!

I don't stuff from my hubby either. I'm the one that pays the bills and tells him how much money we have.

I don't spend as much as I use to either. His hobbies cost a lot more than mine do.

And I encourage him to enjoy them. As much as I enjoy mine.

I don't hide anything either! He drives me o the LSS and waits in the truck for e to shop, never asks how much or what did you get...

He has a Bass boat, travel trailer, 2 pickup trucks and eats breakfast and lunch out everyday...I don't ask either...

As long as the bills are paid and the savings is good, don't ask!

I dont hide anything from my 'hubby' (we're not actually together but share finances), he knows I spend a bit on my crafty stuff, but so long as the bills are paid, the fur babies are fed, and we have a bit of spare cash sitting around, it doesn't matter...

Unfortunately my husband smokes. Do you know how nasty that is and how expensive it is? He griped one time and I told him he could consider it my cigarettes! He hardly ever complains but he does tell me that I have so much stuff. I tell him yep and I'm gonna have more. So I pretty much take the same attitude you have. He has a very expensive aluminum horse trailer. A very very expensive horse he does competitive riding on and several other horses. Now I love them too. But I'm just saying... He has a lot of toys and has to have the best. Like his four wheeler, a zero turn mower. I know he has to have a lawn mower but not one that costs several thousands. If he wants something I never complain and encourage it most of the time. So I expect the same from him.

Oh, I know this is a groan one but I have a DH who dotes on me and spoils me rotten. I love him so much. I do the same for him. My DH is a crafter too. I am the frugal one and he's the one who comes up to me in the craft store and shows me thing he would think I like. He's my enabler. We both share the craft room. He quilts, crochets, glass blowing, leather work, chainmail jewelry, sews, car guy, oil paints and stain glass. He also likes to make weapons. He's about ready to get into gunsmithing. Trust me, my hobbies are not expensive, lol. If I went to the craft store by myself he would be depressed, lol. He finds all the things I do fascinating. He's very supportive.

Just recently, my DH said something for the first time about "all that stuff in your scraproom." I just looked him straight in the eye and said "Yes, I do. And you have a boat." <dead silence> And then I said "And a loader. And more tools than Tim the Toolman Taylor. And real estate "investments." And workout equipment (a full room's worth)." Absolute crickets chirping now.

So for the past week he's been asking about what I'm making. Oooohing and Ahhhhhing over our Christmas cards, etc. He KNOWS he was wrong and he's making up for it. LOL~ I told him that he had to cover both kids' soccer on Oct 1 as I'll be gone all day to the Ranger warehouse sale 4 hours away. He didn't bat an eye. Good man.

I don't hide things from my husband. He doesn't hide things from me. We have a shared account. All of the money is "ours" and I manage the finances. If he wants to buy something, he runs it by me. I'd never say no. It just makes me aware of the expense so I can account for it.

Once, just once, he questioned my spending. And it was on shoes. I'm not a major shoe-a-holic, but when he met me I owned sneakers, a pair of brown dress shoes, and a pair of black dress shoes. None were heels. I've since discovered shoes and now have a nice selection. He didn't understand why I'd keep buying shoes when I already seem to own so many. I simply compared it to his model kits. He has more model kits than he can ever hope to build in his life, yet buys more if he finds a different one that he likes. Once he made that connection, he never questioned my shoe purchases again.

I don't have a problem with DH either...he golfs also (just like almost every other man in this civilized world it seems!) So when he ever asks 'how much did you spend at Mikes/the SU party/or Ecstasy Crafts I like to put into terms he can understand. I tell him that I bought a dozen Pro V golf balls and a new putter!!! He gets the point! LOL

In answer to the original question, I used to: pay cash; split payment (some on a card where he could see it, the rest in cash so he wouldn't know exactly what I'd spent); squirrel away $s - all of the usual. I used to do this, but now that I'm sharing more of the household expenses. I pay for my crafting out of my own $, so he doesn't say anything.

Also, and this is just me, but I feel there's a lot of reinventing the wheel out there these days - seems the stamping companies are copying each other a lot w/o a lot of fresh ideas. I simply don't spend what I used to. Feels good.

My hubby says I can get whatever I want but if it is a larger purchase (like when I got my Silhouette) I always discuss it with him even though I know he won't care.

My DH covers all the household expenses. I work for vacation, remodeling, and play money. My stamping is play money. So as long as I NEVER dip into household funds for stamping stuff, he doesn't care.

Oh, and I try to pay cash whenever I can....hubby is a sport shooter (not animals, just steel plates) and I know his hobby is quite expensive, but he does the checkbook. And even though I work full time, I sometimes get the lifted eyebrows about certain purchases. For the most part he's ok, but really...sometimes I just don't feel like hearing it. CA$H all the way, baby!

The only time I hide something, is if I'm using those particular specialty items to make a gift for him. Other than that, I don't. I pay all the bills, deal with all the finances, do all the shopping for the kids, all the running the kids around, all the meal planning, most of the cooking, most of the cleaning, etc. He works a lot of overtime and travels for work. Since I'm dealing with everything while he's at work or not around, he doesn't say anything about my purchases. I don't buy tons of clothes or shoes or have any other big expenses for just me. He also constantly asks me to make cards and gifts for him to give, so whatever I buy tends to be for his benefit, too.

If I need to hide some supplies (because they're for something for him), I'm home during the day and get the mail, do the shopping, etc. while the kids are at school or he's at work. As long as I get the items put away in my craft area, nobody will pay any attention to them or will have any idea if the stuff is newly purchased or stuff I already had. My family knows not to touch certain items or areas of my crafting supplies without asking me first.

No hiding here. Then again, I am more of a saver than spender, so DH has never had to worry about me. When I do make purchases, he knows it's because I've really thought about if I want it or not and he knows that I'm not spending money we don't have or that could be put to a better use (I do all the bills). I also don't think he begrudges me anything because I take care of all the home and family stuff. He really just goes to work and concentrates on his career and I deal with everything else. I don't have an outside job and I just love being at home, so it's a win-win. I never get on him about what he buys. We have a really easygoing, pleasant marriage so no hiding is necessary (not to mention, I would feel terrible keeping secrets from him).

I don't hide my purchases either. I can't! I would feel guilty if I had to:rolleyes: My hubby is a serious fisherman. He has a boat and every time he gets a new rod/reel combo, I could buy 3 Cricut machines for the same amount. He works really hard at a high pressure job so I don't sweat him about it and he doesn't say anything to me about my purchases.

I am not married so no hubby to worry about but I have to keeep from my mum what I buy even when I am using my own $$. Just make sure things arrive when she is out of town. Throw away or sell off what I don't need anymore to make space for new stuff. Make as many cards as I can, that's one way of clearing space.

LOL~ I'm planning to leave around 5 am. So if you see someone that looks like they ran through the shower, tossed her hair in a ponytail, and stuck on a ball cap, that's me!

It's 4 hours for me in the DC area.
