Anyone had this weird download problem?

For the past year or so, I've enjoyed downloading digital papers, images, etc. (some freebies, some purchases). I replaced my computer last summer, but nothing else has changed -- same email address, same programs, etc.

Just in the last couple of weeks, I tried to download some lovely digi papers. I get to the point where a dialogue box asks "do you want to open or save this file?" and I click "save" like always. Then the weirdness starts. A window opens and closes over and over really quickly, like a strobing effect. I can't manipulate the window, can't open/close the file, etc. It keeps going and won't stop even if I go into my task manager pane and try to "end task." The only fix is to close down and reboot.

In both instances where this happened, the digi items were freebies being shared through the 4shared site. But I've downloaded similar stuff (from the same designers! same sites!) before. Anyone ever had this happen to them? I'm especially sad because these are designers whose work I've really enjoyed, and been able to access until only recently! And their blogs indicate that many others are successfully downloading the files.

Default weirdness

Yes, and it happens when downloading other documents. It began to happen to me after a windows update occured. Sometimes I get it to not happen for a while and then it will sneak in on another day! No good solution, yet, for me.

I began to have problems with 4shared too, started getting "blocked virus attacks". I won't use it anymore.

Sounds like a case of "Scare Ware." Anti-virus programs don't catch it. It downloads onto your computer and "takes over" all of your files while only allowing you to go to their web page and buy their anti-virus software (which I will add here is BOGUS. Please DO NOT fall for this and DO NOT give a credit card number). You really should just shut down your computer and take it to a trusted computer person to clean off the scare ware. Make sure you are running something like Malware Bytes...I think that is what it is called. This stuff is SERIOUS. We're talking organized crime. These malicious programs take over your computer and send info back to the bad guys. Most of the time, it's not the digital paper "designers" that are at fault. THese bad computer mafia groups manipulate internet sites and just put the bad programs where ever they can. You could be downloading from a recipe site, or scrapbook site. They don't care...they just want your secure information. Many malware protection programs will keep you from viewing sites that are infected with malicious code. I think those are a good investment. I don't know which is best, but you can research them online....just be careful.

I've got some good news! Since posting this here, I've picked the brains of a few computer folks I know, and the experiences you shared helped narrow down the issue.

First off -- Scareware. I did re-install a malware detection program that I used to have on my old computer (Ad-Aware). Thanks for the nudge to remind me to install, because I forgot about this when I got my new computer last year. I ran this and it came up basically clean. So we eliminated that as the reason (but good to know!!).

Secondly -- the comment about this starting after a Windows update. This got me thinking. I realized that I was only getting the weird strobing problem when dealing with zip files. Could it be the unzipping (built into Windows) that was a problem? Sure enough, a tech-savvy friend advised that he has often found the Windows unzipper to be problematic. And yes, it could be that an update came along, had some tiny bad string of code somewhere in it, and messed up the unzipping. So he suggested...

Third step -- A free unzip program available online called "7-zip." I installed it, then went to the problematic digi paper files and clicked "open WITH" and selected 7-zip. SUCCESS!!!! All the stuff I used to be able to do, I can do again!

So my story has a happy ending, that I hope some others can benefit from.

And I made my friend a lovely thank you card, using some freshly acquired digital papers, of course!
