Hi there everyone! Welcome to the newest challenge on Splitcoast. This one will be a little different from the usual daily challenges - it will run all month.
The basic idea of the Cards for a Cause challenge is this: each month, stampers are invited to create cards (you can do one, you can do ten - however many you want!) to donate to a specific cause. All cards will be sent to the Post Office box listed below, and the cards will be forwarded on to the featured organization.
For September, in remembrance of 9-11 and in recognition of all that our troops do for us, I've picked the organization Cards for Heroes. Check this link to their "About Us" page to learn more about them. In a nutshell, they donate handmade cards to troops - blank ones to send home to their family and friends.
If you are wondering what to make - there are no restrictions for this challenge! Easy, huh? I will ask that you check their FAQ's for some helpful guidelines about what kind of cards the troops prefer. And, all the cards have to be newly created - that's why this is a challenge! Don't just clean out your stash (although, ou can include those cards in your package, lol) - make something new! There are no restrictions on mail for our troops - so "lumpy" or "heavily embellished" is fine! **If you would like to make a holiday card, please do Thanksgiving or Christmas.**
They do ask that envelopes be included with cards. If you can't spare one, that is fine - when they come to me I will scrounge up a spare envelope to ship out to them. Also, it is possible to sponsor a shipment of cards. If you would like to, and I cannot stress enough how voluntary this option is, you can include $1 in the package, and I will pass all of the money on to them to sponsor the shipments we donate on behalf of SCS, and any others that our money raises. But please do not feel like you have to send any money!
So that's it - -sound like fun? I hope so!! I cannot wait to see how many cards we can gather to send to Cards for Heroes. I've chatted with them via email, and they are thrilled to the recipients of this "card shower".
Please have your cards to me no later than October 2, 2008. Per their shipping schedule, I will be packaging the cards up that weekend and sending them on, so that Cards for Heroes can get them out with their October shipment.
Send them to this address:

Upload your cards to whatever stamp gallery they belong in, and use the keyword CFC01. That way, we can all check the CFC01 gallery to see how many cards we are sending! Have fun, and thanks so much for helping us spread some sunshine! If you have any questions, feel ree to post them here or send me a pm
About glitter:
During holiday cardmaking season it’s tough to avoid glitter, but we ask that you save the glitter for your personal cards. (It is possible that glitter can make a hero visible to night-vision goggles if they get it on their uniforms.)
So no glitter for hospitals NOR for the deployed soldiers.
I recently donated quite a few cards from my "stash" to a SU demonstrator who was giving them to a friend of hers deploying to Iraq to share with other soldiers. I can't think of anything I'd like to do more than donate more to our men and women serving our country. I'll work on my cards today or tomorrow and get them in the mail shortly. Thank you for starting this forum.
I made this card for this challenge and for my Club this Thursday. After that, I will send the card along with a few other fall cards so that they can go to the troops. What a great idea!

Thanks for the glitter tip. Is there any size restriction?
Good question. I'll check back here for an answer.
IMHO it seems that if we all make the same size (standard 4.25 x 5.5) then it would be easier for Taylor to pack them all in one box.

I used to be a shipper for cards for heroes so I can answer this one. the standard size works the best since the cards are sent in the flat rate boxes. But CFH will never turn any size card down.
Thanks for the info. Can't wait to start working on my cards.
Later.....I made 5 cards this morning and will try to finish 3 this afternoon! Fun..Fun
I decided I would put the card and envelope in a clear sleeve so the envelope won't get seperated from the card and anyone can look at the card. Want to get them in the mail tomorrow.
BTW I got the sleeves (not envelopes) on Ebay 100 for $7.50 including shipping. PM me if you want to know the sellers name on Ebay.

As the Mom of an American Hero, My son just finished his 15 month deployment to Afghanistan. The troops are thrilled to receive cards to send home. I and the other Blue Star Mothers in my chapter still support the base that my son was stationed at. One of the first requests from the new chaplain on the base was blank greeting cards for the soldiers. One of the assistant chaplains sent me pictures of the greeting card display center that he built for the troops to choose cards from. So, from the bottom of my heart, Thank you ladies so much for donating cards for them to send to the troops. God Bless American and keep Supporting our Troops!

What a great idea! I was in the Navy for 4 years and I have to admit it was hard getting cards to send to family members. I would have to plan ahead by at least a month or more and purchase them while we were in port and then mail them almost 2 weeks early. I want to participate! Thanks for the opportunity.
Hi! If any Australian stampers are interested PM me as I am working with Sandy from Cards for Heroes to start shipping to Australian troops!!

And yes, thanks for the note about glitter, too, we want to keep our men and women safe out there! All sizes of cards are welcome, but if they get packed right the A2s fit the most in a box.
I'm going to be on a cardmaking binge this weekend, I can't wait til morning to get started!
I just got some fun things in the mail that I ordered yesterday that would be perfect for making Thanksgiving and Christmas cards. I ordered the following embossing folders for my cuttlebug: pumpkin harvest, christmas ornaments, lace tree, snow dots, and snowflakes. These really simplify card making but still give it an elegant feel. Let me see what I can crank out this weekend. I would love to have a package in the mail to you Monday.:p
What a wonderful idea! I've only just discovered the cards for a cause challenge and I'll definitely be participating. Just wondering if anyone knows if there is a similar organization for Canadian troops? I'd like to send some for our guys too!

I've been looking for Canadian contacts for a while; I had one contact deployed in Afghanistan we sent to last summer, but they came home and I haven't found other Canadian troops to send to....I'll come back and let you know if a little more research yields anything for you! (And if you come across any, be sure to let us know at Cards for Heroes...we'd love to share that info!)
I did make a new one but i just got my printer going again, poor thing was hit buy lighting twice so i was slow about loading it again. My granddaughter made four also. I didn't want to be late so i got them in the mail.
I love that SCS has started this challenge! I lead a group of jr. high girls and every month we get together to make cards for a cause. This will be a great one for our September meeting! We're not meeting until the 29th, but I'll get them in the mail by the 30th and send them fast!
This idea for a challenge is spectacular! I love that you extended the time for a whole month! So many times, you make more cards that you can send out, and they sit in your drawer or a box or a closet! It is so nice to think that you can create something that would put a smile on a stranger's face! Thanks so much, can't wait to play!
I was very pleased to see this added to the Challenge list. So glad to contribute something to assist our soldiers since I feel so helpless otherwise. This has even inspired me and some fellow co-workers to find a soldier in need on the AnySoldier site. I mailed some cards to be added to this an hope they arrive in time. I had no time to post any photos. Thanks again for the inspiration and congratulations on a terrific idea.
