This is very sad to see as this magazine has always been one of my favorites. I also have a subscription that runs through April of 2015. I wonder what they are going to do since the parent company will still be operating.
I just picked up the June issue and there were so many great sketches I was considering a subscription. I found it to have been one of the best in all the magazines past and present.
Very little money is made on subscriptions. In fact, some of the deals Scrapbook, Etc. has offered is barely enough to cover the cost of home delivery, much less paper, photography, printing, editors, writers, etc.
Magazine money is made on advertising. In an ideal economy, the more subscribers, the more a magazine can charge advertisers for the space available. In a rotten economy, fewer people subscribe, fewer businesses take out ads, and those that do take out smaller ones in an effort to cut costs. Now, add the availability of free information on the Internet and that makes things even more difficult for print publications.
It is sad. Not just for us, not just for the Meredith Corporation, but for all those people who will be losing their jobs.
I just sent in my payment for renewal. I emailed them asking about a refund, but I'm still waiting for a reply. This was my favorite magazine (after Simple Scrapbooks), and I will miss it, but they shouldn't have accepted renewals as late as last week. I know that things can move quickly, but I doubt that this decision was made overnight.
Luckily I did not respond to a renewal offer that came a few weeks ago but my current subscription expires 2/2013. I emailed them (there was an email address to contact Scrapbooks Etc in the announcement) and this is their reply about my subscription:
Your remaining issues will be transferred to Better Homes and Gardens unless you would prefer to cancel.
So if you do not want a subscription to Better Homes and Gardens, you will need to contact Scrapbooks Etc and ask for a refund.
The postings about renewals reminded me of something. Two weeks ago I got a substitution offer in the mail for Scrapbooks, Etc. I think it was two years for $12. I thought about it but decided against it since I got a Nook color. I want my crafting magazines in digital format. My heart goes out to all those who signed up for the offer. I like Better Homes & Garden. I usually buy my issues at thrift stores.
