Default New stuff at Michaels

Well I just got back from our Michaels. I was going in there for a quick "in and out" with my son. I wanted to get another MS punch. I got the picket fence and the pine tree one. When I was in there I saw a few new items.(For our store anyway) They are carrying flock in a little kit of 5 small skinny bottles I believe. They have a 3 pack of stickles in christmas colors(the ones that I got last year from somewhere else). They already clearanced the Halloween 3 pack of them....it's not even close to Halloween yet!!! New Christmas Inkadinkadoo stamp sets too. That's all I was able to see. Wanted to let everyone know to be on the look out for anything new.;)

Glad to know that my Michael's is not the only one that never gets in new merchandise. The cuttlebug folders & dies for example are the same ones as when the store opened 5+ yrs ago & never got any of the new styles.

My Michaels still has the same cuttlebug folders and dies too. I'm actually surprised to see new stuff. It is coming in slow though. I figure that it might have something to do with the fact that we are getting a brand new Hobby Lobby in the fall. They must be getting smart or just worried.

I was told from another person who was employed @ Ben Franklin crafts, (that went out of business) that when Michael's moved into the area, signed the contract & agreed to build in the new development that the municipality had to agree that they would not allow any other craft stores to build in this development! Now if thats true or not I can't say, but if it is? Seems to me that they do not really care about the customer unless your into floral, framing ect. In my opinion w/ the economy the way it is one would think that they would look @ the scrapbooking/paper crafts end of the business because it sure appears as though we continue to spend money. That is one reason I like to shop @ the small scrapbook stores if I can. Just to bad that they are all so far away for me to travel. Don't get me wrong I do shop @ Michael's, its just that I try to watch for sales when I am in there or wait for a 50% off coupon to pick up the items that I know will be there next month. (And we know they will be there don't we!)

I went through this scenario several years ago when Joann Fabric decided to reduce their fabric inventory by a whopping 30% because the new hot selling items were in scrapbookin and papercrafting. I was furious. My thoughts were that any craft involving paper and stamp pads had to be about next to worthless. It's paper for pete's sake. How lame is that? So....... the same ole fabric languished on the shelves, sales were not that great and then the coupons went from 50% to 40%. I decided that I had enough fabric to last me until death, so OMG I took a look at all of the crap that is necessary for papercrafting and...... I was hooked. Half the fun is buying and using the latest toys, so when stores don't even try to keep current on the latest must have trends.....that's when I shop with my fingers. On the internet. Joannes inventory is unreliable, Michaels inventory is just way too old, Hobby Lobby is like walking into some kind of jumbled up church basement and Archivers is too expensive (although they usually have the latest merchandise).

So - scrapbookingalley - here I come.

That is the worst thing about Michael's (ok, one of them - I only shop there with a coupon). They come in, undercut the LSS and then once they have the large customer base they stop carrying the latest stuff and to make it ever worse they do not care if you have ANY crafting experience when you work there. My friend just got a job there last week and when she tried to tell them which crafts she has experience in they told her it didn't matter!!!! Sure explains a lot to me. Should be interesting to see what the new CEO does with the company.

Ours are getting new things as well. Especially one of our Michaels that has tons of new stuff. Besides the mentioned items, I saw Slice, new Champagne and Frost Versamarks, new papers, new unmounted stamps, new to Michaels Ranger items like: 2 additional color groups in the Alcohol Inks, paints, grungeboard, tool items, Stickles including the Distress ones. Hopefully they'll be coming to the rest of you soon!

Still no new Cuttlebug or Sizzix stuff though. :(

OH Wow...I went to Michaels with my 3 (50%) off coupons on the way home from work last night and they had so much new stuff. Lots of new Clear stamps in the clear stamps aisle and away from that aisle they had a seasonal display of new Inkadinkado clear stamps for fall holdidays and Christmas...I spent a lot...but I did use the 50% off coupons. The stamps were on sale so I used the coupons on Martha Stewart punches...lol They also have a whole bunch of new $1.00 wood ones for fall that are so cute.. I love the Squirrel, leaves, pumpkins and acorns...just so cute...I hope all your stores get them soon.
blessings.

Gail,
Based on the Hobby Lobby reference I'm thinking you were in Poughkeepsie. Do you think the Brewster store got the new stuff, too? I feel like it's so much easier to drive over there than to Rte. 9.
Enjoy the weekend. I'm going to a Scrapbook Day on Sunday from 9-9. Woo Hoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes I was in Poughkeepsie. I keep forgetting about the store in Brewster. It probably would be faster and easier to get to it then the traffic on Rt. 9!!LOL

Where's the Scrapbook Day on Sunday? Wish I was going with you.;)

Hi Alicia,

I went to the Brewster Michaels today and I think that I will always go there if I do not need to go up Rt. 9. It is only about 20 minutes away and they are soooooo much nicer at that store!!!

I was able to get the MS spider web border and corner punch I also got the MS Icicle border punch. I checked out the entire store and I found there clearance section. I was happily surprised when I found a bottle of Prima flowers for $1.99 down from $6.99. I scoured the store for more but didn't find any:(

They did seem to have alot more of the new things than the Poughkeepsie store has.

Ha ha...have you ever been able to "go in and get out quick" at Michaels. I took my son (who was 25 at the time) to AC Moore Craft Store and he followed me around for at least 1 1/2 hrs...what a trooper. I think I treated him to dinner after that.

I'm on my way to Michael's this afternoon. Hoping to find some good deals and get more ideas for my Christmas cards. Have a great weekend everyone.

Hi, all, enjoyed all the different opinions, but I'll be one small voice to say I really appreciate our local Michael's... not that I buy so much there, but the people are great and I sure do want them there when I need them. I'll say the same for JoAnn's and Hobby Lobby... long may they stay in business! For some reason the local scrapbooking stores don't seem to prosper and stick around here so that's not really an option.

I hear that, Bobbyjo. We just lost our local store.
Gail, Toys n More was on 376 but it closed last year. :-(
BUT, Michael's was fun!! The pirate party stuff was 50% off and Ethan's pirate party is in September. I got the SU! pirate party kit, but Michael's had a cupcake decorating kit. It has edible pictures that the kids can "paint." Too cute!
However, they were out of mono refills, grrr......
I love looking at all of the scrapbook paper, but SU! has my heart!
Almost forgot, those little spiral notebooks that are so great for altering (usually $1) are only
47 cents!! I got a bunch for teacher gifts. They also had recipe boxes with matchy-matchy recipe cards. Also just 47 cents each!! How adorable would it be for all the kids in my son's class to write their favorite recipe for their teacher who is getting married?????!!!!!!! I'm so excited - does this mean my life is really boring??

Hey Alicia and everyone!!! I got to go to Michaels alone today. Boy did I enjoy it!!! I got 2 more MS border punches....the scarey fence and the Boo (w/ghost). I also got some beads that were on clearance for my jewelry making. I saw the memo pads the other day for the 47 cents and the boys were with me so I did not take a good look. When I went today the 47 cent clearance area was empty. I guess they either blew the stuff out or put it somewhere in the back. It was NO WHERE to be seen.:( I probably don't need any anyway....I have sooo much as it is.;)

Right about SU (& Papertrey & & &...) but I still love going into almost any store that has scrapbooking supplies. Not sure if you're talking about the same notebooks, but I found them at Michaels awhile back (only one left) with a kraft colored cover that was PERFECT for altering... wished I'd got there sooner.
